St. Mary’s bag second league win in U18 girls.

Castleisland was the venue for the U18 girls game between St. Mary’s and Tralee Imperials last weekend. Lisa Brennan opened the scoring netting two from a fast break, Miriam Leane was quick to respond for St. Mary’s netting two in a row while Danielle McLoughlin, Mary Herlihy and Louise O’Connor all contributed for Castleisland. Imperials Emma Sherwood added their only other basket for the quarter leaving the home side 13 to two ahead at the first break.

Sinead Mackessy, Sabina Sayers and Emma Sherwood were all responsible for the 11 points scored by Imperials in the second quarter. St. Mary’s had some turnovers assuring the second period but threes from Philomena O’Connor and Shielleagh Wrenn kept them in touch and they held an eight point lead at half time.

St. Mary’s came into their own in the third quarter, they settled down, set up moves and played very well defensively.  Mary Herlihy opened the scoring for the quarter and accuracy from Louise O’Connor from the free throw line pushed their side further ahead. Sinead Mackessy was netted a two from Imperials while Lisa Brennan and Emma Sherwood converted from the free throw line.  Amber Galwey and Emma Sherwood exchanged threes.  Deirdre Kearney made her first score of the game to bring Imperials tally to nine for the quarter while the score of the day came from Danielle McLoughlin who hit a massive three from way down town on the buzzer to see St. Mary’s reach 17 for the quarter and go ahead by16.

St. Mary’s continued to defend well and held Imperials to just four points in the final quarter while Mary Herlihy, Philomena O’Connor and Shielleagh Wrenn all hit threes to see St. Mary’s have a comprehensive win.

Well Done to St. Mary’s Galwey Auctioneers who had a win in Cork over Glanmire at the weekend.

Congrats to our Senior men and Division two ladies who both their respective Cup finals in Mounthawk on Sunday last.

Senior Men:

St. Mary’s got off to a brilliant start with Liam Brosnan making a three, a two and a free throw consecutively while Declan Wall added three before St. Paul’s got a chance to respond.  St. Paul’s got into the game with a series of scores mainly through cutting inside unchallenged by the Castleisland side but it was St. Mary’s who held a six point lead at the end of the quarter having scored 31 points, 17 of these coming from Liam Brosnan who was very much on target on the night.

St. Mary’s increased their lead considerably during the second quarter, threes came from Tom Fleming, Declan Wall and Liam Brosnan while John Galvin and Michael Broderick made the scores inside. The half time score stood at 57 to 39 in favour of St. Mary’s.

St. Paul’s turned the table on their opponents in the third period and reduced the gap to 11 by the end of the quarter.  St. Mary’s had started badly in this period having several turnovers and missing easy shot opportunities.

Division Two Ladies.

This was a brilliant final between St. Mary’s and Lartigue Listowel.  The St. Mary’s girls are unbeaten this season and their determination in this game was no less than the any of their performances so far this year. They won the first quarter by a single point with a spread of scores.  Listowel took the upper hand in the second quarter outscoring Castleisland by six and holding a five-point lead as the sides entered the third period.  Both sides made 17 points in the third quarter leaving St. Mary’s still trailing by five with just ten minutes remaining.  Noreen Kearney was working hard inside while Marguerite Wamsley was doing well at the point for her side. The girls fought hard to win back scores as the final quarter progressed and true to their form all season they came up trumps. The O’Donoghue sisters made nine of the 16 points scored for the quarter while Noreen Kearney and Joanne Wamsley added the remaining seven. to see St. Mary’s have a one point win on the buzzer.  Coach Pa Cronin was delighted with his sides performance and felt that all team members made a huge contribution to the win.

St.Mary’s: Margaret O’Donoghue 15, Noreen Kearney 13, Mary O’Donoghue 9, Marguerite Wamsley 7, Joanne Wamsley 4,Siobhán O’Leary,  Caorline Kearney, Kerri Lynch.

St. Mary's club notes 21th of January 2008

Results:

U12 boys had a close encounter with St. Bridget’s during the week; in fact the game was very similar to their first league game in October when St. Mary’s came out on top by a single point just as they did last week.

It was a hard fought battle from the beginning, with St. Bridget’s getting the upper hand in the 1st quarter, Cian W. O’Connor scoring four of St. Mary’s eight points for the quarter while Niall Reidy med six of St. Bridget’s eight. The second quarter saw St. Mary’s take control with Kevin O’Donoghue netting six of Mary’s eight for the period.  St. Mary’s excellent defending prevented St. Bridget’s from scoring.

The ball remained firmly with St. Bridget’s for the third quarter during which Cian O’Connor was sole scorer for St. Mary’s. The score line read 21 to 18 in favor of St. Bridget’s as the sides entered the final quarter so it was still anyone’s game.

Both teams gave it their all and a basket scored by Shane McLoughlin put St. Mary’s ahead by one with just a minute to go.  St. Bridget’s had an opportunity from the free throw line in the dying seconds but it was not to be and the victory went to St. Mary’s

Final Score St. Mary’s 30            St. Bridget’s 29

Scorers for St. Mary’s: Cian W. O’Connor 6, Kevin O’Donoghue 6, Shane McLoughlin 6, Cian O’Connor 5, Thomas Lynch 3, Kieran Herlihy 2, Jack Browne 2.

Congrats to the U12 girls who had a huge victory in the Cup. The girls played an outstanding game from the start. Top Scorer was Máire Dineen with 20 points.

U16 boys had a 10 point win over St. Brendan’s.

Well done to Galwey Auctioneers who had an eight point win over U.L. at the weekend.  Noelle Scanlon was top scorer with 23 points.  Team Garvey’s were unlucky in their game against St. Brendan’s, they led for a good part of the game but it was very close up to the final two minutes when St. Brendan’s pulled away to win by nine. Top scorer was John Galvin with 18 points.

Division two ladies continue their winning streak having had a 75 to 69 over Listowel in extra time.

St. Mary's club notes 12th of November  2007

Well done to St. Mary’s Galwey Auctioneers who had their first win of the season on Saturday last.  The girls gave their best performance of the season so far taking the game by 16 points.

Despite a great start, team Garvey’s were had a nine-point loss to Brendan’s at the weekend. They will be looking for revenge when they meet Tolka in the forthcoming Cup game.  The sides met twice last season, first in January in the cup quarter final when Tolka were victorious by 12 points and later in the league quarter final when once again the Dubliners denied Garvey’s victory on their own home turf. Garvey’s who have three wins from five league games so far this season are capable but will need to remain focused throughout the game if they hope to progress to the next round.

Cup success for Team Garvey’s:

Team Garvey’s secured a win on their first round cup game against North Star on Saturday last.

The first two quarters were low scoring with both sides having a huge number of misses. The score stood at nine points to five in favor of Team Garvey’s, Declan Wall, John Galvin and Liam Brosnan all registering scores for the home side while Gary Campbell and Daryl Harkin hit the target for North Star.

Garvey’s increased the lead to nine points by half time but they were still missing a lot of opportunities. Both sides stepped up their performance in the third quarter.  Garvey’s got a run of fast breaks which they converted. Gary Campbell was on target for North Star netting 10 of their 20 points for the quarter but the visitors trailed by a further five points as they entered the final quarter.  Team Garvey’s played the best of their basketball for the night in this final quarter, Declan Wall and Liam Brosnan hit threes while Michael Broderick, Ruaraí Rahilly and Maurice Casey all contributed to the 27 points scored in the quarter. John Ward kept North Star in touch but once again they were outscored by their opponents.

Final Score: Team Garvey’s 76        North Star 50

Team Garvey’s: Liam Brosnan 21, Declan Wall 18, John Galvin 14, Tom Fleming 7, Michael Broderick 6 Ruaraí Rahilly 4, Laimonas Maslauskis 4, Maurice Casey 2.

Galwey Auctioneers exit Cup.

Galwey Auctioneers were unsuccessful in their Cup game.  The girls were away to Corrib.  The pace of the game was fast from the tip, Corrib has a great start getting most of their scores from inside and taking a nine point lead in the first quarter. St. Mary’s switched to zone in the second quarter and this work well defensively.  This was the only one of the four quarters in which they managed to outscore their opponents. Corrib pulled marginally away in both of the final quarters, foul trouble cost St. Mary’s in the final quarter as Corrib made 11 of their 21 points for the quarter from the free throw line adding to their lead and taking the game by 18 points.  Eileen O’Connor was best for St. Mary’s netting 23 of their 57 points scored.

Final Score: Corrib 75 Galwey Auctioneers 57

Galwey Auctioneers: Eileen O’Connor 23, Noelle Scanlon 10, Tracey Hartnett 7, Dara Barrett 7, Mags Daly 4, Joanne Riordan 2.
