Team Garvey’s had their National league dreams shattered on Sunday last when Tolka Rovers took the quarter final by making good two free throws inside the last 10 seconds of what was a thriller of a game throughout. Tolka had started the well netting five early points before allowing the home side to register a score. Mark Walsh and Vladas Ignatavius were both playing well for Tolka while Michael Broderick was very strong under the boards for Team Garvey’s. A series of scores from Tolka saw them take an 18 to eight lead with just over two minutes remaining in the quarter but scores Paudie Fleming and Declan Culhane brought the home side back to within four points of their opponents with less than a minute remaining, a fast break from Paudie Fleming saw Garvey’s narrow the gap to two when Eamon John O’Donoghue made a terrific steal and set Tom Fleming up for the equalizer but Tolka’s Alan Kelly who had a brilliant game netted a two on the buzzer to see the visitors go ahead 20 to 18 at the end of the first quarter. A Tom Fleming three pointer saw Garvey’s go ahead for the first time in the game in the early stages of the second period. Eamon John O’Donoghue set Michael Broderick up for two and Paudie Fleming added two more to put Garvey’s ahead by five until Alan Kelly and Ignatavius both made scores for Tolka. Both sides exchanged scores for the remainder of the quarter. Eamon John O’Donoghue sustained an ankle injury just before the end of this quarter and was from here a huge loss to his side. Garvey’s held a five-point lead at one point but uncontested scores from Kelly, Walsh and Jeff Quinlan saw Tolka hold a one point lead at the interval. Alan Kelly pushed Tolka ahead by two more at the start of the third but Michael Broderick, Declan Culhane and Eamon John O’Donoghue all stepped up for the home side to push them ahead again, a lead that was held up until the last minute of the game. Scores from Michael Broderick and Declan Wall added to Garvey’s tally while defensively the home side were making it difficult for Tolka who managed only 15 points to Garvey’s 27 for the quarter. The scoreboard read 72 to 61 in favor of the home side as final quartered commenced. Garvey’s made some bad passes in the early stages while Tolka had become sloppy at the free throw line. Mark Walsh continued to impress for his side, the gap was narrowed to five points until Declan Wall made a three for Garvey’s. Paudie Fleming and Maurice Casey exchanged scores with Alan Kelly. Tolka were playing well defensively preventing Garvey’s from getting their own rebounds and thus picking up scores to narrow the gap. Both sides were on foul trouble at this point but Tolka were not as accurate as they had been earlier. With just 1.51 remaining on the clock Paudie Fleming went to the free throw line and was good for two to push Garvey’s ahead by five points. Fleming had a brilliant game throughout and while it appeared that the opposition may have thought him inexperienced due to his young age he proved them wrong stepping up to each challenge put before him and contributing hugely for Castleisland in particular in the final minutes when the pressure was really on. Tolka Rovers Bernard Walsh and Eoin Quill each made threes while Mark Walsh netted a two to put them ahead for the first time since the start of the third quarter with just 1.01 remaining. Paudie Fleming stepped up to make a spectacular three with just 10 seconds remaining much to the delight of the Castleisland supporters. Tolka’s Bernard Walsh was fouled and was good for two from the free throw line leaving just nine seconds for Garvey’s to attempt a score. Paudie Fleming received the inbound and took on his opponents laying it up on the buzzer, the shot, good as it was circled the rim and looked to be going in but slipped back out much to the dismay of the crowd and team alike. Overall it was a brilliant and exciting game, final score was Team Garvey’s 90, Tolka Rovers 92. Team Garvey’s:
Declan Wall 24, Paudie Fleming 17, Michael Broderick 13, Eamon John
O’Donoghue 12, Declan Culhane 8, Tom Fleming 7, Dan Griffin 6, Maurice
Casey 3, Niall Murphy, Darby Buckley, Ruaraí Rahilly, Liam Brosnan and

No joy for Team Garvey’s |
|||
|
Team Garvey’s were unsuccessful in their bid for second place in the league when they met Moycullen on Saturday night last. Garvey’s Michael Broderick opened the scoring but Adrain Walsh was quick to respond with three points to put Moycullen ahead, a lead they kept throughout the game. While the Galway side netted a series of threes in this first quarter they did a good job in defense preventing Team Garvey’s from attempting outside shots. Moycullen, led 19 points to 13 at the end of the first quarter., Garvey’s started the second quarter with a two from Eamon John O’Donoghue, this was quickly followed with a fast break which came from an offensive rebound by Michael Broderick which set Declan Wall for two and a bonus. Only one point separated the sides at this point but Team Garvey’s then picked up a foul and two technical fouls giving Moycullen six free throws and possession, five of the six were scored giving the visitors a six point advantage once again. Scores from Declan Wall and Niall Murphy and Michael Broderick kept the home side in touch but Adrian Walsh and Cian Nihill continued to make the scores which kept Moycullen ahead by eight points at half time. Garvey’s defended well in the early part of the third quarter and mid way through only four points separated the sides, a quick steal got Moycullen back on scoring form as a two pointer was followed by three threes, two from game top scorer Adrian Walsh. Moycullen now led by 13 but this was reduced once again with scores from Eamon John O’Donoghue and Declan Wall. The sides finished the third quarte 55 points to 47 in favor of Moycullen. Declan Wall
opened the final period with a three, Adrian Walsh responded with two.
The sides exchanged baskets for the next few minutes both sides now
having players in foul trouble. As
the sides progressed Moycullen stepped up their defense giving Garvey’s
few shot opportunities, 10 points separated the sides with just two
minutes remaining. Garvey’s were now on team fouls and Moycullen added
four points from the free throw line to finish fourteen points ahead of
the home side. Final score: Team Garvey’s 56 Moycullen 70 Team Garvey’s: Eamon John O’Donoghue 15, Declan Wall 14, Michael Broderick 8, Dan Griffin 8, Declan Culhane 5, Paudie Fleming 2, Niall Murphy 2, Tom Fleming 2, Maurice Casey,Darby Buckley, Ruaraí Rahilly, David Marshall. Moycullen: Adrian

Team Garvey’s
continued their winning streak at the weekend when they had a sixteen
point win over Waterford crystal in Waterford.
Garvey’s, who traveled with just nine players, took control of
the game from the tip securing several fast breaks and leading 17 point to
12 at the end of the first quarter. Dan
Griffin was in fine form and was responsible for eight points in this
first quarter while Waterford Crystal were not shooting well. Garvey’s continued
to dominate during the second period Michael Broderick and Maurice Casey
were strong in defense winning all rebounds and depriving their opponents
of shot opportunities, had widened the gap to nine points by half time. Waterford Crystal made a comeback in the third quarter outscoring their visitors by three points. Paudie Fleming netted two threes and along with scores from Michael Broderick, Declan Wall and Declan Culhane Garvey’s kept ahead by six points. While Waterford’s
Andy Piper, Kieran Nyhan and Alejandro Vera were a threat throughout the
game Garvey’s stayed focused and came back in the final quarter with all

Garvey’s seal another victory. |
|||
|
With just two games remaining in the southern conference team Garvey’s secured another win in Castleisland on Friday night last. They are now safely through to the next stage but their final two game will decide whether they go straight through to the quarter finals or whether they will first have to go through a qualifying tournament.
Saturday nights game was against Limerick Lakers. Garvey’s Eamon John O’Donoghue was first to register a score, while the home side defended well Lakers were making scores from outside and the sides were level at the end of the first quarter. The loss of Jason Keane to a double technical in the second quarter was a blow to Lakers and by half time Garvey’s had pulled well away and led 54 points to 33 from here in it was not a challenging game. Lakers were without key player John Galvin, this combined with the loss of Keane and then Augastanicius in the third quarter was a huge blow to them. Garvey’s Declan Wall who had sustained an injury during the week played only minutes for his side.
Garvey’s were in fine form on the night with Paudie Fleming having his best game of the season to date. Fleming’s accuracy from both the free throw line and from play saw him total 13 points for the game. By the end of the third quarter Garvey’s led by 26 points and the teams merely went through the motions during fourth quarter. Final score was 84 points to Team Garvey’s, 65 to Limerick Lakers.
Team Garvey’s:
Dan Griffin 17, Eamon John O’Donoghue 15, Paudie Fleming 13, Michael
Broderick 10, Ruaraí Rahilly 9, Tom Fleming 7, Declan Wall 5, Darby

Garvey’s move up the table! |
|||
|
Following
a comprehensive win over Titans in Castleisland on Saturday night last,
Team Garvey’s now share second place in the southern conference league
table. While
a great performance was given by Team Garvey’s the same could not be
said for their opponents on the night. An
early steal resulted in a three from Declan Wall and from here Garvey’s
never looked back. The home side defended well as they have been doing in
recent games and they were accurate in their shooting throughout the game. Garvey’s
held a ten point lead at the end of the first quarter and were up 10 at
half time. By the end of the third quarter they held a comfortable
21-point lead and while Danny Finn and Rimvydas Viscokas were both playing
well for Titans but Eamon John O’Donoghue was outstanding inside for
Garvey’s winning all rebounds and forcing Titan’s to take the outside
shot. As
the game progressed Titan’s forced their shots in an attempt to narrow
the gap but to no avail as a brilliant team effort by the home team saw
them take the game by 23 points and move up to joint second in the
conference. Final

Team
Garvey’s and Meadowlands St. Brendan’s treated their respective fans
to yet another thriller on Saturday night last in Castleisland. The
sides met for the third and final time in the preliminary games of the
men’s National league division one southern conference and it is looking
more and more likely that both side will indeed progress to the next stage
of this competition. Saturday
night’s game proved to be a nail biter as were the two previous games. It
was Meadowlands who took the lead in the early part of the game, Ric
Leonard and Tomas Salionas taking control of the boards for St.
Brendan’s while Cathal O’Sullivan was dong well on the outside.
Michael Broderick, Dan Griffin, Declan Culhane and Declan Wall all
contributed to keeping Garvey’s in touch throughout the quarter at the
end of which Garvey’s trailed by just four points. Garvey’s
Liam Brosnan was spectacular during the second quarter netting ten points
and setting up much of the sides remaining scores six of these coming from
Eamon John O’Donoghue. Despite
two early turnovers, four points from Brosnan saw the sides level just a
minute and a half into the quarter. Tralee’s Mark Mitchell came into the
game at this point and was a great asset to his side Vinnie Murphy also
contributed hugely. The sides
went basket for basket for the remainder of the quarter and were level
with 41 points a piece at halftime. The
turning point in the game came in the third quarter when Team Garvey’s
took control of the game. Meadowland’s
had several turnovers including failing to get a ball inbound inside the
given five seconds. As the quarter progressed Garvey’s gradually crept
ahead, they led by six with jut under four minutes remaining but a three
from Cathal O’Sullivan kept Brendan’s in the game.
Garvey’s made some bad passes at this point but came back again. A three from Tomas Salionas reduced the gap from 11 points to
eight for Meadowlands but Garvey’s Declan Wall responded accordingly
with three as the quarter was blown up. Meadowland’s
trailed 65 to 54 entering the final quarter but fought a brilliant battle
as they have done in previous games. Ric Leonard was first to score for
Brendan’s while Team Garvey’s had two miss hits before Eamon John
O’Donoghue set Liam Brosnan up for two for the home side. O’Donoghue
added two more points as did team-mate Dan Griffin increasing the home
sides lead to 15 points. Ric Leonard and Liam Brosnan exchanged scores and
Mark Mitchell made two consecutive baskets for Brendan’s
while Garvey’s Declan Culhane won back two for his side. Culhane had a
great game for Garvey’s defending well and netting a total of 14 points
for the game. Garvey’s
turned over the ball and went through almost four minutes of not making a
score while Meadowlands made a tremendous comeback.
Three from Vinnie Murphy quickly followed a two from Ric Leonard
much to the delight of the Tralee supporters. Mark Mitchell made two from
play and two from the free throw line making a total of nine unanswered
scores from the visitors and leaving the score-line at 75 points to 71 in
favour the home team with just 1.38 to play. Neither team scored for the
next minute and tension was high among players and spectators alike. Liam
Brosnan who had one of his best games of the season so far made two from
the free throw line but Meadowlands Vinnie Murphy who also had a superb
game sank a three in response. Only
three points separated the sides with just 16 seconds remaining both sides
showing great enthusiasm. Both sides were in foul trouble so accuracy form
the free throw line was vital at this point. Declan Culhane stepped up to
the challenge for Garvey’s making one from two with just 13.8 seconds on
the clock. Tomas Salionas netted a three bringing Brendan’s back into
the running again. Brendan’s
went one on one for the inbound but a foul sent Team Garvey’s Liam
Brosnan to the free throw line with jut five seconds remaining. Reliable as always Brosnan sank both. Salionas attempted a three from the inbound but to no avail. Team
Garvey’s took the points in what was a truly entertaining game. Final

Garvey’s crash in final minutes. |
|||
|
It was table toppers Meadowlands St. Brendan’s who took an early lead in this local derby going eights points to two ahead just minutes into the game which was played in Castleisland. Team Garvey’s had had a few turnovers at this point. The home side settled as Declan Wall netted a three and two. Michael Broderick made some good rebounds for Castleisland. Wayne Quinlan who cut through for two consecutive baskets kept meadowlands in touch. Team Garvey’s led by three points at the end of the first quarter. Garvey’s further increased their lead with an early score from Liam Brosnan, which was set up as a result of a steal by Eamon John O’Donoghue. Rick Leonard made several attempts to cut inside for scores but was double teamed by Garvey’s who were playing well defensively. Tommy Walsh was also attempting to cut but was not finishing. Walsh made a lay up from a fast break, which was followed by a basket from Leonard leaving only four points between the sides. Eamon John O’Donoghue & Dan Griffin stretched Garvey’s lead once again. Vinnie Murphy made two for St. Brendan’s but Griffin and Buckley made scores, which put Garvey’s ahead by 10 points with just 52. seconds remaining to half time. At this point it appeared that fitness was the main ingredient that was present in the home team but lacking in the visitors. Both sides were now in foul trouble and Rick Leonard and Vinnie Murphy both made good the opportunity to lessen the gap by each netting two from two just before half time leaving the score at 38 points to 32 at the interval. Meadowlands St. Brendan’s had several missed attempts at the start of the third quarter and both sides lost possession to fouls before Leonard made one from the free throw line. Broderick and Brosnan both made scores for Castleisland, Declan Wall and Wayne Quinlan. Rick Leonard was now performing very well for Meadowlands and Tomas Saltonas was making a much greater impression than he had in the first half, while Vinnie Murphy made some good call from the point. The game was now becoming intense and the crowd reacted accordingly. Eamon John O’Donoghue sustained an injury and was a huge loss to Garvey’s. By the end of the third quarter an enthusiastic Meadowlands had made a considerable recovery and trailed by only one point. In the final quarter it was Meadowland’s St. Brendan’s who dominated. Tommy Walsh, Tomas Saltonas and Rick Leonard all making early scores putting Brendan’s ahead for the first time since the first quarter. A cut from Ruaraí Rahilly kept Garvey’s in touch but this was Garvey’s only score for the first five minutes of the quarter and they now trailed by seven. Successful free throws from Liam Brosnan and Declan Wall brought Garvey’s back to three but good play from Salontas and Walsh for Brendan’s ensured that this was as close as they came for the remainder of the game. By now both side had received technical fouls and tempers were short. Medowlands had plenty of opportunity from the free throw line to push well ahead but overall apart from Rick Leonard, who scored 12 of his 28 points from the free throw line, they were inaccurate. Team Garvey’s also had some opportunities to score from play but failed to make good. Leonard set Tommy Walsh up for Meadowland’s final basket of the game while it was Tom Fleming who closed the scoring for Team Garvey’s with a three just before the final buzzer. Final Score: Team Garvey’s 64 Meadowland’s St. Brendan’s 74. Garvey’s St. Mary’s:Declan Wall 17, Liam Brosnan 13, Michael Broderick 7, Ruaraí Rahilly 6, Darby Buckley 5, Declan Culhane 5, Eamon John O’Donoghue 4, Dan Griffin 4, Tom Fleming 3, Meadowland’s St. Brendan’s: Rick Leonard 28, Tom Soltonas, Tommy Walsh 14, Cathal O’Sullivan 6, Vinnie Murphy 5, Wayne Quinlan 4. The Garvey’s and Meadowlands meet once again in Castleisland on Saturday night next, January 20th. Tip of is at 8.15pm St. Mary’s National league ladies, Galwey Auctioneers meet U.L. prior to this game, tipping of at 6.15pm |

Garvey’s pipped in final minute. |
|||
|
Both
sides were well matched throughout a game that was decided in only the
final minutes. Liam Brosnan, Dan Griffin and Declan were the big hitters
for Garvey’s in the early stages with Cian Nihill, Fergal McAndrew and
the Cunningham brothers making the scores for Moycullen. Only two points
separated the sides at the end of the first quarter. Team
Garvey’s were the stronger side in the second period shooting 21 points,
10 of these coming from Liam Brosnan.
While Moycullen stayed in touch, they trailed by four for the
quarter giving Garvey’s a two-point advantage at half time. Moycullen
took control in the third quarter. Adrian
Walsh netting three – three pointers for Moycullen who took the lead by
five points as the sides went into the final period. Team
Gavey’s slipped back by nine points in the early part of the quarter but
made a huge comeback with scores coming from Liam Brosnan, Declan Wall,
Maurice Casey, Declan Culhane and Dan Griffin.
Team Garvey’s held a four point lead with just 1.40 remaining but
Moycullen made two steals resulting in three pointers from Cian Nihill and
Fergal McAndrew. A single free throw from Michael Dowd sealed a four point
victory for Moycullen. Moycullen:

| Garvey’s Shatter Waterford Crystal. | |||
|
A
great start to last Saturday’s league game against Waterford saw Team
Garvey’s keep their focus throughout the forty minutes and come out with
another win, which keeps them joint second in the Southern conference
mid-way through the competition. The
first score of the game, which was played in Waterford IT, went to
Waterford’s team captain Steven Begadon but Garvey’s Declan Wall was
quick to respond with five consecutive points. From
here on Team Garvey’s held the lead with Ruaraí Rahilly netting a
basket and three free throws for the visitors while Maurice Casey add four
more points. Luidvikas
Baballauskas was in fine form for Waterford who trailed 20 points to 22 at
the end of the first quarter. Waterford
had a good height advantage over their opponents and this kept them in
touch as the game progressed. Team
Garvey’s whose first five were playing very well together changed to a
new five mid-way through the second quarter.
The second five proved to be equally competent and increased the
lead by a further two points to give them a 40 to 36 lead at half-time. Garvey’s
continued to increase their lead but as the third quarter progressed
Waterford Crystal made a comeback as they had done when the sides last
met. This was partially due to the fact that Team Garvey’s were in foul
trouble. Scores from Liam
Brosnan and Tom Fleming safeguarded them as they entered the final period. Waterford
Crystal got into foul trouble in the early part of the final quarter.
As a result the final period was long and drawn out with 12 of Team
Garvey’s final 14 points coming from the free thrown line where they
also left several points behind. Waterford
lost Darren Murphy to fouls during the last quarter. Team
Garvey’s held a seven point lead before Ruaraí Rahilly made a lay up
just before the buzzer to give Team Garvey’s a nine point win at the end
of the game. Overall it was a brillant team performance by Garvey’s,
defence was excellent throughout and all team members contributed to the
final score. Final
Score: Team Garvey’s 76:67 Waterford Crystal. Team
Garvey’s: Declan Wall

| Heated affair in Castleisland game. | |||
|
Team Garvey’s bagged another league win this
weekend when they registered a win over Limerick Lakers in what was a
heated game. It was the first
time this season that Team Garvey’s played in their own home venue,
Castleisland Community Centre and the lads adapted well to the newly
refurbished venue winning three of the four quarters and matching their
opponents in the remaining period. Declan Wall opened the scoring, Wall scored a
personal best in this seasons league with a tally of 31 on the night.
Jason Keane was first to register a score for Lakers putting them in the
lead with a three while teammate John Galvin quickly added two points for
the limerick side. Galvin who
had earlier in the day played a football match was outstanding for Lakers. The pace was fast the game but in particular in this first quarter. The sides were close up to mid-way in this first quarter but Team, Garvey’s pulled away in the latter part to hold an eight-point lead at the end of the period.
John Galvin netted
a basket for Lakers just seconds into the second quarter but Declan Wall
and Liam Brosnan responded each with threes to keep Garvey’s ahead.
Lakers Giedrius Augustinrius and Kevin Hegarty kept Lakers in touch but
Garvey’s were strong offensively and maintained a comfortable lead.
Michael Broderick was rebounding well defensively for Garvey’s, as was
John Galvin for Lakers. Garvey’s had some
turnovers which resulted in Lakers levelling at 33 points each with 1.13
remaining to play in the second quarter. Tom Fleming, Dan Griffin, Michael
Broderick and Ruarai Rahilly all came good inside the final minute to push
the home side ahead by eight at half time. Team Garvey’s led
41 points to 33 as the side entered the third period. At this point
the game became somewhat heated. While the home team managed to hold on to
a 12- point lead, they did have several turnovers during the quarter. Paul
Kennedy and Jason Keane shone for Lakers at this point while a team effort
saw Garvey’s continue to dominate.
Five points from Tom
Fleming pushed Garvey’s ahead early in the final period. At this stage
the game had become very physical. With only three minutes remaining
Garvey’s led by 12, in the one and a half minutes that followed only
five points were scored between the teams
Lakers Des White was
ejected from the venue having received a double intentional. Despite
Lakers best efforts Team Garvey’s had the edge throughout the game and
Irish International Paudie Fleming sealed victory when he shot a three on
the buzzer to give Team Garvey’s a comfortable 18-point victory. Final Score:

Garvey’s
back on form: |

Team Garvey’s had a successful trip to Galway on Sunday last. The met Titans for the second time in the league and on this occasion the desired result was achieved. Titans were the first to register a score, the first of 24 points, which came from Linus Mitkus. Mitkus, who was over six feet tall, was Titans most impressive player on the day. Garvey’s Declan wall responded with a three and from here in his side kept the lead. Both Wall and Dan Griffin were very strong offensively for Garvey’s throughout the game. Defensively Garvey’s were also very strong with Declan Culhane doing rebounding well. Despite the best efforts of Titans James Durkan and Mitkus, Garvey’s crept into the lead in the early stages and held a nine-point lead at the end of the first period. Titans played a much better second quarter, Linas Mitkus making his presence felt managed 14 of the 16-points scored by his side during this period but Garvey’s made several steals for easy lay-ups to win the quarter by four points increasing their lead to 13 points at the half-time interval. The third period was closer with the home team outscoring Garvey’s by just a single point. Titans kept the pressure on for the duration and once again outscored Garvey’s by two points in the final quarter but Garvey’ team captain Declan Wall was defending well while all other team members were making the vital scores required to give a 10 point lead at the end of the game. Final Score:Titans 56 Team Garvey’s 66 Garvey’s: Declan Wall 18, Dan Griffin 14, Declan Culhane 9, Michael Broderick 7, Liam Brosnan 7, Paudie Fleming 5, Tom Fleming 4, Maurice Casey 2, Ruaraí Rahilly, David Marshall. No joy for team Garvey’s. |

Traditionally
a strong side, Moycullen have always been one of the toughest opponents
encountered by Castleisland in the National league, on Saturday last this
proved once again to be very much the case when the sides met at NUIG
Galway. From
the tip the Galway side had the upper hand and led at one point in the
first quarter by 16 points to four. After
some time Team Garvey’s got their act together and managed to pull back
to a very respectable 16 points to 12 by the end of the first period. Cian
Nihill and Adrian Walsh were most impressive for Moycullen at this point
while Declan Culhane and Dan Griffin were working hard for Garvey’s with
Liam Brosnan and DeclanWall bringing in scores from the free throw line. It
was during the second and third quarters that the game was won with
Moycullen dominating. Again
during the second period, Adrian Walsh was responsible for the majority of
Moycullen’s scores, netting 10 of his sides 22 points for this second
quarter while his team mate Cian Nihill added seven points of his own to
this tally. Team Garvey’s captain Declane Culhane managed four points
and these along with two from Michael Broderick were Garvey’s only
scores of the second period during which some harsh calls cost the
visitors. Moycullen
were too strong defensively for the Kerry side while in turn they shot
well from outside and broke Garvey’s making some good inside scores also
and netting a total of 22 points to Garvey’s six for the quarter. The
third quarter was similar to the second with Moycullen scoring 24 points
and a now disheartened Garvey’s responding with just nine points of
which Liam Brosnan was responsible for six. During
the fourth quarter Team Garvey’s played in the spirit that is normally
shown by them and stayed within five points of their opponents but at this
point the desired result was far from their clutches.
Nilill, Walsh and Gearoid Hynes shone for Moycullen during this
final period while for Garveys’ scores came for Declan Culhane who was
the most impressive for his side one the day, also from Liam Brosnan,
Declan Wall, Tom Fleming and an admirable performance was given by Paudie
Fleming who scored six of the sides 19 points in this final quarter. :

Garvey’s
started well winning the tip and setting Dan Griffin up for a three. While
both side played well defensively they each had several opportunities to
score throughout the quarter but failed. The score-line read five points
to six in favour of Waterford with almost half way through this first
quarter. With just over four minutes remaining Garvey’s put on a full court press which immediately resulted in a steal and two from Griffin. Waterford found it difficult to break the press and as a result had several turnovers. Despite the fact that Michael Broderick was doing well under the boards for Garvey’s, Luidvikas Baballauskas still managed 10 points for Waterford during this period. Garvey’s
led 17 points to 14 at the start of the second quarter. Broderick continued to do well under the boards for the home
side but both team were rushing their shots and wasting good
opportunities. Alejendro Vera was brought on for Waterford mid way through
and contributed ten points for the visitors while Ruaraí Rahilly and
Declan Wall came into their own for Castleisland netting 11 points between
them. Player/coach Maurice Casey made his comeback for the team
with just under less than two minutes remaining in this second quarter and
true to his usual form won some vital rebounds. Frank Rahilly also made
his return to the team in this game. Team
Garvey’s led by four at the half-time interval. Garvey’s
played with great intensity throughout the third quarter making several
fast breaks and increasing the gap. Mid-way
through the quarter the sides were eight points apart and from here up to
the last minute and a half of the quarter Waterford failed to score. The
visitors were unable to get the ball inside and were forced into
unsuccessful outside shots. During this time Declan Wall netted 12 points
for St. Mary’s while all other players also contributed to the 16-point
lead that the home team held at the end of the period. During
the fourth quarter Waterford Crystal made a strong comeback finally
breaking inside with Antanas Toliusis impressing and scoring a total of
eight points. Liudvikas Baballauskas was also in good shooting form now. Michael Broderick was in foul trouble at this point and was a
huge loss to Garvey’s while being rested.
Garvey’s led by eight with two minutes remaining but despite this
late comeback from Waterford Garvey’s were never in trouble and finished
12 points ahead with the last basket of the game coming from team newcomer
Sean Nolan with a minute of play remaining. Final score

Cup defeat for Team Garvey’s. |
|||
|
Team
Garvey’s exited this season’s cup following a 12-point defeat at the
hands of Tolka Rovers at the weekend. Tolka
got of to a strong start with Eoin Quill and
Vlad Ignatavicius netting threes before Garvey’s Michael
Broderick made the home sides first score of the game. Tolka
led 10 points to four just three minutes into the game. Scores from Liam
Brosnan and Dan Griffin brought Garvey’s back in touch but Tolka who
were playing a great defence put on a press increasing the pressure on
their opponents. At
this point Dan Griffin was doing well for Garvey’s but it was Tolka who
were winning everything from the boards. A three from Paddy Boylan gave
Tolka a three point lead three points with two minutes remaining in this
first quarter. Scores
from Dan Griffin and Michael Broderick who were Garvey’s best throughout
the game put Garvey’s in the lead by a single point at the end of the
period. In
the first three and a half minutes of the second quarter Tolka went well
into the lead scoring a huge 15 points compared to a single basket from
the home side. Tolka
Captain Mark Walsh was responsible for
eight of these. Garvey’s
managed to hold their opponents to a single basket over the next four
minutes while making a good comeback with scores from Eamon John
O’Donoghue, Declan Wall, Broderick and Griffin but the home side were
now in foul trouble. Tom Davy and Vlad Ignatavcius
added scores to Tolkas tally to give the Dubliners a five-point lead at
half time. The
score-line read 43 points to 38 as the sides entered the third quarter. V
Ignatavicius continued to shine for Tolka, who, following a series of fast
breaks made some great scores and held a 12-point lead just six minutes
into the quarter. Both teams were on team fouls as the quarter progressed
with Garvey’s Eamon John O’Donoghue on four personal fouls.
This was O’Donoghue’s first game with Castleisland this season
and he was doing well inside for his team. Griffin
and Broderick continued to be the key players for Garvey’s and between
them were responsible for 13 of their sides 16 points during this quarter. Tolka
held a 10-point lead as the sides entered the final quarter with
Ignatavcius and Quill playing best. Garvey’s
got into foul trouble with only three minutes of play gone. This quarter was the closest and highest scoring of the game
with the side scoring 28 and thirty points.
Tolka held a 25-point lead with less that four minutes remaining in
the game when Garvey’s made a comeback, all team members were now
registering scores for the home-side who prevented their opponents from
scoring in the dying minutes but the gap was too great to close at this
point and Tolka secured their place in the second round of the senior cup
with a 12-point win. Final score:
Garvey’s 82 Tolka 94 Team
Garvey’s: Michael Broderick 23,

Supporters
and spectators were treated to a thriller of a game in Mounthawk on
Saturday night last when new comers to the men’s division one league,
Team Meadowlands Tralee (St. Brendan’s) suffered their first loss of the
season to league veterans Team Garvey’s of Castleisland.
Home
side St. Brendan’s got off to a brilliant start with Wayne Quinlan
scoring two points followed by a three from Tomas Salponas in the very
early stages of the game. Meadowlands
went to register seven points before Team Garvey’s managed to register a
score two and a half minutes into the first period.
Salponas responded immediately with three for Brendan’s but
Garvey’s Dan Griffin came back with a basket plus one from the free
throw line leaving the sides ten points to five mid-way through.
Wayne Quinlan was strong inside for Brendan’s while Thomas
Salponas was in top from outside Garvey’s were finding it difficult to
make the scores but they in defence the away team were winning ball
despite the fact that Meadowlands had a good height advantage. Meadowlands
were in foul trouble mid way through the quarter; at this point Team
Garvey’s were coming back with scores coming from Declan Wall and Liam
Brosnan. With
1.46 left to play the home side trailed by a point, neither team scored
for the remainder of the quarter despite the fact that Garvey’s had
opportunities both from the free throw line and from play.
Meadowlands Vinnie Murphy, who had been a noticeable presence on
the court, received an injury just before the end of the quarter. Murphy
was out for the remainder of the game and was a huge loss to his side. Team
Garvey’s lead 17 points to Meadowlands 16 at the end of the first
quarter. Team
Meadowlands came back with a vengeance during the second quarter. Ricardo
Leonard put Meadowlands on top again with two points on the shot clock but
this was responded to by two from Michael Broderick who was dong well
inside for Garvey’s. Three
more from Leonard followed by a steal and two from John Walsh took the
visitors by surprise. At this
point team Garvey’s were rushing their shots, making little use of the
24-second shot clock and making inside passes which were of little use as
their opponents had such a height advantage over them. Garvey’s
made some changes to their side, Paudie Fleming coming to immediately make
an impression with some good rebounding but Brendan’s continued to widen
the gap, three points coming from Fergal Sullivan.
John Walsh was impressive for the home side while Declan Culhane,
Ruaraí Rahilly and Michael Broderick all kept team Garvey’s in touch. John
Walsh who was playing well for St. Brendan’s was now on three fouls, his
side were once again on team fouls while the opposition were defending
much better. The
sides finished at half time with Meadowlands leading by five points, the
score at half time being 32 to 27 in favour of the Tralee side. Team
Garvey’s showed their true form in the third quarter. Garvey’s captain Declan Culhane netted two followed by a
steal from Declan Wall setting up two for Dan Griffin leaving only a mere
point between the sides. Michael
Broderick and Liam Brosnan added to this to put Garvey’s ahead by three.
For a short time it looked as though the inexperienced St.
Brendan’s might be out of their dept but a steal and lay up from Stephen
Hannifin proved this not to be the case. Despite a brief lead for the
visitors following a free throw from Liam Brosnan, Meadowlands were back
on track with scores coming from Tomas Salponas and young Jason Quirke.
Garvey’s
Paudie Fleming narrowed that gap to one point and went on to net a basket
on the buzzer giving Garvey’s a one-point advantage as the side entered
the final quarter. The
final period of play was a show stopper, Garvey’s Dan Griffin who played
tremendously throughout netted a basket and a free throw to edge his side
ahead by four at the start of the quarter but his side slipped up by
giving an easy basket away to St. Brendan’s player of the game, Tomas
Salponas, this was followed by a single point from the well known Ricardo
Leonard who did well inside through out the game.
Garvey’s responded showing some great teamwork between Declan
Wall and Dan Griffin. Brendan’s
were now playing a good strong defence and prevented Castleisland from
scoring within the allocated 24 seconds.
Cathal O’Sullivan brought his side back to within one point of
their opponents when Declan Wall netted three to leave the sides 52 points
to 48 in favour of St. Mary’s with 6.37 remaining in the game. At
this point the game was quite physical, Team Garvey’s having a slight
edge on the home side. Liam
Brosnan was good for three points while his teammate Michael Trod
Broderick was rebounding for St. Mary’s.
Rick Leonard was due to his height, making it difficult for the
visitors to do much damage inside but Declan Wall still managed to
contribute adding two further points to the Castleisland score.
Garvey’s led 57 points to 52 with just 4.41 remaining.
At
this point Wayne Quinlan returned having been earlier benched due to
injury, he continued as before, making a contribution to the game. Liam
Brosnan netted two vital three pointers for Garvey’s during this period.
Brendan’s stayed with the game making it impossible for the
visitors to feel comfortable at any point.
Garvey’s led by two points with 1.58 on the clock when Wayne
Quinlan netted two to level. Liam
Brosnan failed to make an attempted three for Castleisland, Declan Wall
missed another three-point attempt, Meadowland’s
held possession when Dan Griffin made a steal and was fouled by John
Walsh. Griffin was good for one giving St. Brendan’s possession with only one
point separating the sides and just nine seconds remaining in the game.
Team Garvey’s Declan Wall made the vital steal required as the
clock ran down, giving Team Garvey’s their second win of the season
while Team Meadowlands registered their first loss of the league.
Despite the fact that it was overall a low scoring game, it was a
brilliant one for Kerry basketball enthusiasts. Final Score:
Team Meadowlands/St. Brendan’s 62: Team Garvey’s St. Mary’s 63 Team Meadowlands: Tomas Salponas 21, Rick Leonard 11, John Walsh 8,
Wayne Quinlan 8, Stephen Hannifin 5, Jason Quirke 4, Fergal Sullivan 3,

Team Garvey's record home loss to Titans |
|||
|
Team
Garveys suffered a loss to Titans at their first home game of the season
in Killorglin on Saturday last. It
was a full 50 seconds into the game before the home side got possession
and it was a further minutes and a quarter before they registered their
first score, which came from Niall Murphy from the free throw line. Scoring
was low for the early part of the game, both sides putting up plenty of
ball but not finishing. Niall
Murphy was doing well offensively under the boards but his side trailed
eight points to two half way through the quarter.
Remus Visockas was making it difficult for Garvey’s to get inside
while at the other end of the court he was making several vital scores for
Titans along with Danny Finn, Paul Peldizius and Tom Costello.
Garvey’s trailed by eight at the end of the first quarter. Declan
Wall netted three for Garvey’s early in the second period. Titans were now missing a lot of opportunities but despite
this Danny Finn and Remus Visockas were still on target for the visitors.
Paudie Fleming sank a three for Garveys to narrow the gap to three
mid way through the quarter this was followed by a rebound from Darby
Buckley resulting in a lay up from Declan Wall leaving only one point
between the sides. Titans
came back at this point and registered 15 points more before half time
while Team Garvey’s managed only four more leaving them twelve points
behind at half time. Paul Peldizius was still one of the most impressive
for Titans. Team
Garvey’s played their best basketball of the game in the early part of
the third quarter despite getting into foul trouble .Ruarai Rahilly was
first up with two free throws, these were quickly followed by two from
Liam Brosnan and two more from Rahilly leaving only five between the side
mid way through the quarter. At this point Titans came back with a
vengence netting five unanswered points. Remus Visockas was responsible
for eight of Titans 21 points during this period in which the visitors
outscored the hme side by three pints giving them a fifteen point lead as
the sides entered the final period. This
was the closest quarter of the game with Titans scoring 23 points to
Garvey’s 21, 10 of which are credited to Declan Wall. Once again Finn,
Visockas and Peldizius continuing to star for Titans. Times was not
available for the home side to make a strong enough comeback at this point
and the game finished with the visitors enjoying a 17 point victory. Final Score:

Team Garvey’s secure first win of the season. |
|||
|
Team Garvey’s registered their
first win of the season on Saturday night when they managed a five-point
win over Limerick Lakers. The
game was fast and physical throughout, both sides in foul trouble in each
period. It took some time for Team
Garvey’s to settle and make scores while Lakers made some good fast
breaks. John Galvin for
Limerick Lakers was very strong under the boards but mid-way through the
period Team Garvey’s started to win all defensive rebounds and some good
scores came from Liam Brosnan, Declan Wall and Dan Griffin. Team
Garvey’s held a three-point lead at the end of the first quarter. Much of the scoring during the
period came from the free through line as both side were in foul trouble
once again. Eleven points
from Liam Brosnan and seven from Declan Wall pushed Team Garvey’s ahead
while John Galvin continued to dominate from Lakers assisted by Paul
Kennedy but Lakers only managed three baskets from play during this
period, all three coming inside the last three minutes. Team Garvey’s held a five-point
lead as the side entered the third period.
A series of scores from Declan Wall, Liam Brosnan and Tom Fleming
kept Garvey’s on top while Michael Broderick was strong inside but
Lakers continued to stay with their opponents, threes coming from team
Captain Scott Ross, Jason Keane and Stephen Cunneen. It was still anyone’s game as the sides entered the final quarter, Garvey’s leading by eight points. Although Garvey’s maintained the lead, Lakers came close on several occasions. By now both teams were in serious foul trouble and not in a position to lose players. With only 35 seconds remaining a three from Lakers put the pressure on once again as only three points separated the sides. Garvey’s played the ball well using the clock to their advantage and two fouls on Liam Brosnan who had a tremendous game throughout ensured two extra points giving the visitors a five point lead a the end of the game.
