Galwey Auctioneers Depart Division 1 Ladies League:
01-03-2008
St.
Mary’s Galwey Auctioneers were unsuccessful in their quarter final of the
ladies division national league at the weekend.
Having secured third place in the Southern Conference the girls travelled
to Sligo to meet second place in the Northern Conference, Sligo All Stars.
Although the sides had not in over two years, battles between them had
always been closely fought.
The most
noticeable difference between the sides as the players took to the court was the
height difference. The Sligo All
Stars post players towered above the St. Mary’s girls.
Sligo
started strong Kelly Johnson, Lisa McGill and Edel Kellly taking control of the
boards and registering score after score. St.. Mary’s found it difficult to
settle in this first quarter. Sligo
got into some foul trouble awarding several set of free throws to Castleisland
but apart from this they gave little away from play. The Sligo side pushed ahead and held a sixteen-point lead at
the end of the first quarter.
Galwey
Auctioneers settled from here in and managed to stay within three points of
their opponents for the second quarter. Joanne
Riordan was doing well in drawing the fouls and making scores from the free
throw line as was Reidin O’Loughlin and Eileen O’ Connor but they trailed by
19 points at half time. The sides
were neck and neck for the remainder of the game with Galwey Auctioneers taking
the third quarter and fourth quarters by a point but time was not on their side
and although the sides seemed evenly matched from the second quarter in, it was
during the first period that the damage had been done and the gap proved to big
to close.

Galwey
Auctioneers had a comprehensive win over U.L. Aughinish in their final game of
the Southern Conference at the weekend.
The
Castleisland girls led by six points at the end of the first quarter.
Their lead had increased to 31 points by half time with all nine players
who had travelled to Limerick registering scores at this point it was evident
that U.L. were not strong enough to make a comeback.
St Mary’s went on to net 19 points in each of the final two quarters
while holding U.L. to just 15 points in total in the second half.

Another terrific performance sealed victory for St. Mary’s Galwey Auctioneers in what was their second last game of the Southern conference at the weekend. The home side opened with a three from Eileen O’Connor. Una O’Mahony followed with a quick steal and basket and Maire Walsh added three putting St. Mary’s ahead eight nil inside the first two minutes of the game. A time out by Tipperary set Edel Maher up for The Knights first score of the game. The home side had two consecutive turnovers allowing Knights to register another two points. A foul and a turnover cost the homeside and Knights had leveled midway through the quarter but St. Mary’s got back on track, Una O’Mahony playing brilliantly up top as was Eileen O’Connor while Reidín O’Loughlin was winning everything under the boards. The home side held a 20 to 16 lead at the end of the first quarter.
Reidin O’Loughlin opened for St. Mary’s making two consecutive baskets. Mags Bourke netted Tipperary’s second three for the game but Mags Daly set up two fast breaks for Una O’Mahony who was good for scores on both occasions. St. Mary’s now led 30 to 19 with five minutes left in the quarter. Edel Maher made a two for The Knights, it was their first score in six minutes. Edel Maher was outstanding for The Knights throughout the game. The sides exchanged scores for the remainder of the quarter and Galwey Auctioneers held an 11 point lead at half time.
The Knights started well in the third quarter and had leveled mid way through but from here in St. Mary’s got back into the game, scores from Mags Daly , Joanne Riordan, who had a great game and Noelle Scanlon put the home team ahead by eight as the teams entered the final ten minutes.
The first 14 points of the final quarter came from Galwey Auctioneers who were playing extremely well as a team. Edel Maher made a three for Knights mid way through and along with Sharon Hayes and Elaine O’Dwyer the Tipp side managed 19 points for the remainder of the quarter but they were no match for Galwey Auctioneers who totaled 39 for the quarter and won by 24 on the final buzzer.

Important win for Galwey Auctioneers.

With just two games to play in the Southern conference, Galwey Auctioneers are now in a good position to qualify for the National Quarter final following a win over Glanmire at the weekend.
The St. Mary’s side had brilliant first quarter netting 22 point to their opponents 13. Una O’Mahony was responsible for nine of these while Eileen O’Connor took credit for eight.
Glanmire had a better second quarter and reduced the gap to seven by half time but St. Mary’s maintained the upper hand throughout. Galwey Auctioneers whose scoring was spread throughout all team members won the third quarter by three points leaving the score at 42 to 53 in favour of the Castleisland girls as the sides entered the final quarter.
The game changed dramatically during the final period. Glanmire, who had pressed on and off during the first three quarters got the better of their opponents, The Cork side intercepted several of St. Mary’s passes and held their opponents to just eight points for the quarter. Glanmire levelled with just a minute remaining but Noelle Scanlon was fouled and awarded two free throws with less than 30 seconds to play. She missed the first but made the second putting her side up a point.
Following a Glanmire inbound a jump ball gave
possession to Galwey Auctioneers, a timeout was called by coach Ger Tarrant
whose expertise led to the St. Mary’s side holding possession as the clock ran
out. St. Mary’s took the game by one. Una O’Mahony had an outstanding game
for St. Mary’s but overall it was a great team performance.

Auctioneers put Cup winners under pressure:
02-02-2008
St. Mary’s Galwey Auctioneers gave their best performance of the season when they met Cup winners Singletons Super Valu Donoughmore in Castleisland on Saturday last.
The home side had a great start with the
scoring spread between six players, Eileen O'Connor and Noelle Scanlon were working
hard for the home side, for Donoughmore it was American Rachel Vanderval who
made 11 of their 17 points but it was St. Mary’s who led 20 points to 17 at
the end of the first quarter.
Donoughmore outscored the home side by just three points in the second quarter.
Both Reidín O’Loughlin and Dara Barrett were winning a lot of ball
under the boards for Galwey Auctioneers. Again it was Vanderval who was most
impressive for the Cork side netting 10 of their 16 while Liz Kellleher made two
threes. Noelle Scanlon,
Maire Walsh, Tracey O'Sullivan and Dara Barrett kept the home side in touch.
The sides were level at 33 points a piece at half time.
Fiona Lynch went on a scoring spree for
Donoughmore during the third quarter but Máire Walsh was good for two two's and
a three to help keep her side in the game.
Donoughmore led at the end of the quarter by six points.
Donoughmore once again outscored the home time during the final quarter, while
Eileen O'Connor and Noelle Scanlon fought hard and won a lot of ball but a
spread of scores from a fitter Donoughmore side saw them creep ahead to win by
11. Una O’Mahony, Máire Walsh,
Eileen O’Connor, Joanne Riordan and Dara Barrett and had fought hard
throughout and made vital scores but with Vanderval making 29 points on the
night the task was near impossible.

Despite having home advantage, Galwey Auctioneers had no answer to local rivals St. Paul’s when the sides met for the second time this season in Castleisland on Saturday night. The home side rebounded well during the early stages and made several fast breaks but found it near impossible to hit their target and making only seven points in the first quarter compared to 19 from the Killarney girls, eight of which came from Muirossa Galwey.

St. Mary’s made several bad passes which were intercepted by Paul’s during the second quarter. Again Mustangs were extremely accurate in their shooting and by half time the visitors held a 39 to 18 point lead. A combination of good defense and well calculated shots saw Killarney widen the gap as the game progressed. St. Mary’s had several unluckly shot attempts as the final quarter progressed but they failed to win rebound overall their pace slowed. St.
Mary’s Galwey Auctioneers secured their first win of the season at the

home ground was much needed.
Miriam
Leane who made her home debut netted the first score of the game this was
followed by a series of scores from Dara Barrett, Mags Daly and Joanne Riordan.
While Laura Fitzpatrick and Lisa O’Sullivan were doing well for Glanmire
overall the Cork side were sloppy in their passing and had several turnovers in
this first quarter, which ended with St. Mary’s holding an eight-point lead.
The home
team lost some ground in the second quarter. They attempted several outside
shots but failed to find their target while Rachel Foley Lauren Dennehy and Amy
Stewart joined Fitzpatrick and O’Sullivan to take Glanmire into a two-point
lead at half time.

third quarter was closely contested with Galwey Auctioneers outscoring Glanmire
by a single point. Christina Fleming and Máire Walsh both made threes for the
home side while Emma Gallagher and Lauren Dennehy responded for Glanmire. Dara
Barrett continued to be a threat having her best game of the season to date
