Team Garvey’s lose out to the Braves of Ballina
01-03-2008
St.
Mary’s had a disappointing weekend in National league as Team Garvey’s lost
their bid to reach the National semi-final.
The lad started well opening the scoring and going eight points to three
up inside the first three minutes of play but Ballina who had the advantage of
having four of their clubs super league players on their squad, were quick to
come back. Deora Marsh took some time to settle but once he did his experience
was invaluable to the Mayo side. Liam Mc Hale and Declan Wall exchange three
early in the quarter. Liam Brosnan was very much on target on the night and was
responsible for nine of his sides 17 for the first quarter. For Ballina it was
Liam McHale and Paul Barrett who dominated and contributed most to their sides
26 points for the first quarter.
Both
sides had turnovers early in the second quarter
but once they settled Marsh and McHale
pushed Ballina further ahead. Declan
Wall and Paul Barrett exchange threes. Garvey’s were being called for
everything and as a
result John Galvin who was now on three personal fouls was benched for
some time and a loss to Team Garvey’s. Three’s from Liam Brosnan and Declan
Wall saw Garvey’s make a great comeback and go ahead by two points with less
than three minutes remaining in the quarter. Paul Barrett made two quick baskets
and two free throws towards the end of the quarter and Ballina led 47 to 43 at
half time.
Garvey’s
were noticeably tiring as the game progressed and by mid way in the third
quarter it was evident that they were in trouble.
Maurice Casey and John Galvin were responsible for the eight points
scored by Garvey’s in this period but Ballina’s William Popplewell found his
target and netted 10 points out of a total of 19 for the quarter for Ballina who
held a fifteen point lead going into the final quarter.
While
Team Garvey’s attempted several shots in the final quarter they were unlucky
with many but still managed 13 for the quarter however Ballina were winning most
of the defensive rebounds and making the fast breaks, they continued to find
their target and increased their lead to 18 on the final buzzer.
Team
Garvey’s: Liam Brosnan 18, Declan Wall 16, Michael Broderick 11, Tom

Garvey's win last league game
24-02-2008
Garvey’s
Final game of the season was played in Castleisland on Sunday.
The result was irrelevant as third place in the league had been secured
nevertheless the lads gave a brilliant performance and totalled 93 points for
the game.
The
first quarter was close with threes coming from Liam Brosnan and Declan Wall on
Garvey’s side while John Galvin and Maurice Casey made the inside scores.
For Titans it was Danny Finn who was most impressive, he made 12 of
Titans 18 points for the quarter.
Team
Garvey’s pulled away during the second quarter with Tom Fleming and Michael
Broderick added their names to the register while Conor Mac Michael and Chris
Joyce joined Danny Finn to keep Titans in touch, however the home-side held a 10
point lead at half time.
Despite
having just six players on the day and being noticeably tired from having had
Saturdays game, Garvey’s went on to win the third quarter with some brilliant
scores coming from Galvin, Fleming, Wall and Brosnan. The gap was increased to 16 as the sides commenced the final
quarter. Danny Finn and Conor
MacMichael were playing very well for Titans but just about everything falling
for Garvey’s the task was near impossible.
Garvey’s
held a 20 point lead with four and a half minutes remaining but some careless
offences along with several foul calls cost them and Titans who had stayed with
the game throughout made a gallant comeback netting 36 for the quarter and
reducing the gap to five points on the buzzer.
Team
Garvey’s: John Galvin 30, Liam Brosnan 23, Tom Fleming 17, Declan Wall 13,
Michael Broderick 8, Maurice Casey 2.
Titans: Danny Finn 39, Conor MacMichael 20, Darran Callanan 11, Paulius Pelzdius 7, Tom Costello 6, Chris Joyce 3 and Jack Considine 2.

Team Garveys go down to Moycullen
23-02-08
Team
Garvey’s had two games back to back to decide their fate for the quarter
finals of the National League. Unfortunately,
Moycullen proved to be the stronger side on Saturday. Garvey’s opened poorly having four scoreless offences
before John Galvin made their first score of the game. As the quarter progressed
the visitors made up some ground and were level with just less than three
minutes to play in the opening quarter. Minducas
Kurcenkovas put Titans up again but a three on the buzzer from Declan Wall saw
Team Garvey’s hold a one point lead at the end of the period.
Both
sides took some time to settle in the second quarter with Moycullen registering
their first score four minutes in. It
took a further three minutes before Garvey’s responded. Team Garvey’s were winning a lot of defensive ball at this
point but were forcing the fast breaks and turning over as a result.
The half-time score was 30 to 25 in favour of Moycullen.
The
third quarter was basket for basket but again Team Garvey’s lost some
opportunities to go ahead as a result of forcing shots and not using the 24
second clock. Moycullens Cian Nihill made a two on the buzzer to keep his side
just a basket ahead as the teams entered the final 10 minutes.
Moycullen
pushed gradually ahead as the fourth period progressed.
Garvey’s got into foul trouble early in the quarter due to some harsh
calls being made and Moycullen were accurate from the free throw line.
Moycullen managed 26 points in this final quarter, Garvey’s made 14 to
leave the final score at 59 to 72 in favour of Moycullen and securing home venue
for their quarter final next weekend.
Team
Garvey’s: John Galvin 19, Declan Wall
13, Michael Broderick 12, Tom Fleming 7, Liam Brosnan 4, Ruaraí Rahilly 2,
Maurice Casey 2.
Final Score: Titans 63 Team Garvey’s 68
Murphy’s moment saves the day!
02-02-2008
Team Garvey’s had a rewarding result
following their journey to Renmore in Galway last weekend where they met Titans
for the second time this season. Michael
Broderick opened the scoring for Garvey’s following a turnover by the home
team. Titans Rinvydas Visockas
responded with two but Declan Wall, Liam Brosnan and John Galvin went on to make
scores to put Garvey’s up seven mid way in the quarter.
Titans were at this point losing a lot of ball due to sloppy passing.
Visockas made a three to narrow the gap and Titans got their game in order. The
side traded scores for the remainder of the quarter and a turnover cost
Garvey’s a basket inside the final minute. Just a single point separated them
as they entered the second period, Garvey’s having the upper hand.
The second quarter was similar in that Garvey’s pushed ahead in the early stages but the home side came back with a run of scores from Paulilus Peldzius who was on three fouls at this point. A three from Liam Brosnan kept Garvey’s ahead but this was followed by a run of miss hits and turnovers. Danny Finn was now in fine shooting form for titans who crept ahead and led by six at the half time break.
Michael Broderick, Ruaraí Rahilly and John Galvin all made early baskets to level early in the third period. Danny Finn stepped up once again for his side and Garvey’s repeated some of their errors from the second quarter missing several opportunities and allowing the home team go back up by seven. The score board read 55 to 48 in favour of Titans as the sides entered the final 10 minutes.
John Galvin who was having a great game for Garvey’s was first to hit the target bringing Garvey’s back into the game. It was some time before Finn responded for Titans who seem to have lost their way at this point. Galvin added two more for Garvey’s and Declan Wall made a basket from outside followed by one from Galvin to level. Garvey’s were in control of the game at this point while foul trouble was causing some difficulty for Titans. One each from Galvin and Wall put Garvey’s ahead until Finn made scores from both the free throw line and play to level the sides again with 3.40 remaining on the clock.
Neither team scored for the next minute, it was with 2.20 to play that Niall Murphy made a vital score and also netted the bonus to put Garvey’s ahead by three. From this point Garvey’s made good use of the clock ensuring that they maintained their lead to the end. John Galvin made the final basket of the game putting Garvey’s up five as the clock ran out. Great credit is due to the squad as the lads were missing Paudie Fleming due to injury, Tom Fleming and also player coach Maurice Casey.
Final Score: Titans 63 Team Garvey’s 68
Team Garvey's: John Galvin 24, Declan Wall 21, Liam Brosnan 10, Michael Broderick 5, Ruarai Rahilly 5, Niall Murphy 3. Neilus Lyons, Joe Watson.

Team Garvey’s unlucky to lose
19-01-2008
Team Garvey’s were very unlucky to lose to Meadowlands St. Brendan’s at the weekend. The lads led by seven in the very early stages and held a two point lead at the end of the first quarter. By half time Meadowlands St. Brendan’s had gone ahead by two. Some great defense combined with scores from John Galvin, Declan Wall and Ruaraí Rahilly saw Garvey’s hold a five point lead as the sides entered the final quarter but Meadowland’s Ric Leonard and Roscoe Patterson proved impossible to stop in the final quarter and Meadowland’s took the game by nine.
Final Score: Team Garvey’s 64 Meadowland’s St. Brendan’s 73

Garvey’s let their guard down.
15-11-2007
A
disappointingly bad start cost Team Garvey’s in their weekend game against
Moycullen. The Castleisland lads failed to get their game in order during the
first two quarters and despite a tremendous finish, they handed the much sought
after points to Moycullen in a game where a win would have kept the top spot in
the southern conference still a possibility.
Although
Garvey’s led seven nil three minutes into the game Moycullen’s Cian Nihill
hit three threes and this combined with some great rebounding by Nollaig
Cunningham set Moycullen up for a 21 points to 12 at the end of the first
quarter.
Cian
Nihill widen the gap early in the second quarter.
Team Garvey’s were not as strong in defence as they normally are and
two turnovers handed two easy baskets to the visitors. Mindaugas Kurcevacouas
was hitting his target while for Team Garvey’s it was not happening.
Kurcevacous, Cunningham and Nihill were at this point dominating the game and
Moycullen led 42 to 21 at half time.
Maurice
Casey who had been introduced in the second quarter was responsible for a
dramatic change in the game from the third quarter on.
Although his side trailed by massive score he played with great
enthusiasm his squad followed suit. With
6.05 remaining in the third period it was Team Garvey’s who were on the attack
and by the end of the quarter they had reduced the gap to nine points opening up
the game.
Garvey’s
continued to claw their way back as the game progressed.
John Galvin doing well inside while all team members were now in fine
form but although they came as close a three points at one stage it too late in
the game and Moycullen had a four point win on the day.

Team Garvey’s too strong for Waterford.
15-11-2007
Team Garvey’s had their second win over AOL Broadband Waterford when the sides met in Castleisland on Saturday night last. Liam Brosnan opened with a two and a three for the home side. Waterford got into early foul trouble sending John Galvin to the free throw line twice in the quarter however four threes from Waterford saw the sides’ level at the end of the quarter.
Both sides were in fine shooting form during the second period. Garvey’s made several steals which they converted. The home side held possession for the greater part of the quarter and led by four points at half time.
Offensively Garvey’s were strong under the boards as the game progressed and defensively they prevented the visitors from getting to the boards. Liam Brosnan and Declan Wall made some good scores and Garvey’s had crept ahead by 15 points at the end of the third quarter having scored a whopping 31 points. Waterford were having difficulty with their outside shooting where they normally pick up points although Antanos Toliusis and Steve Bedagon were both strong for their side.

Team Garvey’s let their guard down in the early part of the final quarter and allowed Waterford to come back to within nine points at one stage, Waterford had now picked up on their defense but in the final minutes Garvey’s got back into the game and up once again taking the game by 13 points.
Team Garvey’s: Liam Brosnan 24, John Galvin 20, Tom Fleming 12, Declan Wall 11, Michael Borderick 7, Paudie Fleming 5, Niall Murphy 1, Ruarai Rahilly, Donal McCarthy, Joe Watson.

Team Garvey’s robbed in dying minutes
17-10-2007
Team Garvey’s were once again outdone by Tolka Rovers who snatched the game in the dying minutes by just two-points.
Tolka who are the current Cup champions trailed for more than three quarters of an exciting game in Dublin on Saturday last. As expected it was a tough and physical game during which some harsh calls cost the Castleisland boys who had traveled with just eight players.
Team Garvey’s opened with threes from
both Liam Brosnan and Declan Wall, they defended well and Tolka were poor in
their shot attempts in the early part of the game. By the end of the first
quarter Garvey’s had made 28 points to their opponents 17.
While Garvey’s went on to defend well in the second quarter they did not perform as well in defense and allowed Tolka to make up some ground leaving just nine points between the sides at half time.
Tolka’s Eoin Quill was impressive and along Mark Walsh hit several outside shots in the third period but Liam Brosnan and Declan Wall were equally as accurate for Garvey’s.
The Dublin side went briefly ahead by a single point with just a minute remaining until two late baskets from Liam Brosnan kept Garvey’s three points as the sides entered the final quarter.
John Galvin stretched the lead to five-point for St. Mary’s early in the fourth quarter, Garvey’s were now making a good job of breaking through Tolka’s defense but Garvey’s were getting a rough time from the officials who cost them possession on several occasions. Tolka made some fast breaks which put them ahead by a point mid way through. They maintained this one point lead up to the last nine seconds when a foul and technical sent Eoin Quill to the free throw line, he made one from four and Tolka had possession which they lost but despite having just less than three seconds on the clock Garvey’s failed to get a shot off before the final buzzer.
Best for Tolka was Eoin Quill while Liam Brosnan and Declan Wall were outstanding for Team Garvey’s.
Team Garvey’s: Liam Brosnan 25, Declan Wall 18, John Galvin 16, Paudie Fleming 6, Michael Broderick 4, Maurice Casey 4, Ruaraí Rahilly 2, Niall Murphy.

Runaway Victory for team Garvey’s.
03-11-2007
A brilliant team performance saw Garvey’s secure their third league win of the season.
The Castleisland boys started with a very tight defense which they maintained throughout the game denying Moycullen access to the board. By the end of the first quarter Garvey’s held a 15 point lead having scored 25 points to Moycullen’s 10. John Galvin and Michael Broderick were performing well inside while Liam Brosnan, Declan Wall and Paudie Fleming all contributed threes.

Laimonas Mauslauskis
and John Galvin. John scored 16 points on the night
Moycullen were more accurate in their shooting in the second quarter and managed to net 17 points but were still outscored by the home team who made five three pointers in the quarter. The half time score stood at 47 to 27 in favour of Garvey’s.

Away win for Garvey’s.
27-10-2007
Team
Garvey’s secured their second league win of the season on Saturday last.
The Castleisland side travelled to Waterford to play AOL Broadband
Waterford in a game that very much resembled last years end of season game.
Garvey’s
took an early lead with John Galvin registering the first score of the game.
Waterford got into foul trouble early in the quarter and while their
opponents made a total of eighteen points in the first quarter, ten of these
came from the free throw line. Waterford’s scores came from Niall Berry,
Kieran Nyhan, Antanas Toliusis and Alejandro Vera who all scored from play to
give the home side fourteen points at the end of the period.
Waterford’s
Alejandro Vera made a huge impression in the second quarter netting over half
the points scored for his side while Antanas Toliusus chipped in to reduce the
deficit. Despite the best efforts of Galvin, Wall, Ruaraí Rahilly and Liam Brosnan, Garvey’s had let their guard down in the early stages and had
several turnovers which resulted in Waterford holding an eight point lead at one
point but Garvey’s made a great comeback in the final minute to go ahead once
again by two points.
Waterford’s Antanas Toliusis and Alejandro Vera were still doing most of
the work for their side in the third quarter but Garvey’s settled and scores
from Wall, Galvin and Broderick saw the sides level at 52 pints a piece as they
entered the final quarter.
Garvey’s managed to go eight points ahead by mid way in the fourth
period but Waterford fought hard. A
basket from Alejandro left just a single point between the sides, he missed the
bonus opportunity to equalise at this point but a basket from Niall Berry
followed by a three from Darren Murphy put Waterford ahead by four points with
less than two minutes to play. Waterford
were once again in foul trouble and Michael Broderick who had a great game
overall netted a free throw which was followed by a basket from Liam Brosnan
leaving Garvey’s just a point behind with1.01 on the clock. A brilliant
defence by both Michael Broderick and Paudie Fleming saw Garvey’s gain
possession setting Liam Brosnan up for a three with just 35 seconds remaining.
Garvey’s now held a two-point lead and Waterford’s Toliusis unsuccessfully
attempted a basket, which was rebounded by Garvey’s John Galvin, a jump gave
Garvey’s possession. Michael
Broderick passed the inbound to Paudie Fleming who was fouled.
Fleming accurate as always made two from two from the free throw line to
secure a four-point lead for Team Garvey’s with just six seconds remaining.
Waterford attempted a shot from out side on the buzzer but to no avail.

Garvey’s increased the lead to nine points by half time but they were still missing a lot of opportunities. Both sides stepped up their performance in the third quarter. Garvey’s got a run of fast breaks which they converted. Gary Campbell was on target for North Star netting 10 of their 20 points for the quarter but the visitors trailed by a further five points as they entered the final quarter. Home Venue was no asset to Team Garvey’s
when they hosted Meadowland’s St. Brendan’s in Castleisland on Thursday
last. The visitors took control of
the first quarter from the tip. Brendan’s
set up their offence and made good all opportunities to register scores unlike
the home side who were rushing their shots and turning over a lot. Tomas
Salponas was impressive for St. Brendan’s hitting his target repeatedly. The
first quarter finished 31 points to 15 in favor of St. Brendan’s.
The second quarter was similar in that
Team Garvey’s were not playing as a team or setting up any offences while
their opponents continued to widen the gap and by half time twenty points
separated the sides.
The tables turned in the third quarter
with St. Brendan’s letting their guard down and Team Garvey’s making an
impressive comeback. Meadowland’s
made two early turnovers which were converted to three’s by Team Garvey’s
Liam Brosnan, a series of failed attempts from both teams followed by a two and
bonus from Garvey’s John Galvin. The gap was reduced to 11 points with just
two and a half minutes gone in the quarter. Team Garvey’s were now setting up
offensively but continued to poor in defense. Despite this they clawed their way
back into the game. The score at the end of the third quarter was 58 to 64 in
favor of Meadowland’s.
With only six points separating the sides it was all for the taking as the sides entered the final period. St. Brendan’s opened with two baskets but Garvey’s soon got back into form. The sides traded baskets throughout and at one point only three points separated the sides but a series of fouls sent St. Brendan’s to the free throw line and accuracy here along with a Wayne Quinlivan last second basket sealed victory for the visitors.

Garvey’s started well with a three from Liam Brosnan followed immediately by two from Declan Wall. Titans missed some opportunities in the early minutes but quickly came on from and netted three unanswered threes to take a four point lead midway through the first quarter. Garvey’s came back once again, some great rebounding from Michael Broderick and John Galvin leading to fast breaks. Titans netted a total of six three pointers in this quarter but Team Garvey’s were playing well and outscored the home side by six.
Team Garvey’s were poor in defense at the start of the second quarter, titans took full advantage of this by cutting and taking the inside basket. The half time score was 41 to Team Garvey’s, 34 to Titan’s.
John Galvin increased the lead to nine having made a great score from a rebound but Paulius Peldzius responded for the home side responded immediately.
Titans followed this with some bad misses from under the board but despite this Garvey’s let their guard down allowing the home side back into the game. A basket at the end of the quarter from John Galvin kept Garvey’s in the lead by just two points as the sides entered the final quarter.
The first score of the final quarter came three minutes in from John Galvin. Peldzius was fouled out for Titan’s early in the quarter and was a huge loss to them, it was five minutes in before Conall McMichael but this was followed immediately by a three from Kieran O’Neill bringing Titans back to within a basket of their opponents once again. As time was running out Titans forced several outside shots, Liam Brosnan and John Galvin were quick to pick up the rebounds.
