Costly loss for Galwey Auctioneers.

Galwey Auctioneers have put themselves under severe pressure following a loss to The Knights on Saturday last. They started well and held a four-point advantage at the end of the first during which Tracey Hartnett made a huge impression netting 10 of the twenty points her team scored in the quarter.

The second quarter proved to be a huge disaster as the home side managed to net only six points while their opponents The Knights went on a spree scoring 24 points 14 of which came from the free throw line.  From here in the home side fought to catch up but were outscored in both of the remaining periods.  The visitors held a 22 point lead at the end of the third with American player Molly Peterson making most of the scores from play while Edel Maher was accurate from the free throw line. Maher scored 23 point for Knights with 19 of these being free throws. Knights were the fitter side and Peterson was the difference between the sides. Galwey Auctioneers would now have to win both of their remaining game to have any chance in qualifying for the playoffs.

Final score: Galwey Auctioneers: 45 The Knights 69

Galwey Auctioneers: Tracey Hartnett 11, Jackie Hartnett 11, Máire Walsh 5, Reidin O’Loughlin 5, Sandra O’Connor 4, Dara Barrett 3, Mags Daly 2, Jennifer O’Connor 2, Una O’Mahony 1, Tara Brosnan 1, Eileen O’Connor, Louise Hartnet.

Hartnett sisters are tops for Galwey Auctioneers.

It was a week of mixed fortunes for Galwey Auctioneers.  On Tuesday night last they met Mustang Sally’s St. Paul’s in Presentation Killarney.  The Castleisland side started well appearing to be the more spirited and hungry of the teams. They took an early lead, which they held throughout the first three quarters.  Mustang Sally’s were not in their usual form on the night and were not as accurate on the boards as normal.  Nevertheless, despite the fact that Galwey Auctioneers held a 13-point lead at one point, Mustangs kept with the game and narrowed the gap on several occasions. Mags Daly was outstanding for Castleisland who for the most part of the game gave one of their best performances to date this season.

A three from Cassandara Buckley inside the final three minutes of the game was the turning point for Killarney who went on to take the game by five points thanks to some brilliant late scores from Muriosa Galwey.

On Saturday night St. Mary’s went on to meet U.L.  The Limerick side started with a burst, Miriam Byrne and Niamh O’Donovan playing well and netting 14 of their 15 points in the first quarter.  Castleisland trailed by four points at the end of the first quarter their scores coming from Máire Walsh, Dara Barrett and the Hartnett sisters, Sandra and Tracey.

A good team performance in the second quarter saw U.L. net 23 points while defending well and holding St. Mary’s to just 14. Louise Mulcahy and Miriam Byrne were U.L.’s key players at this point.

As the sides entered the third quarter the prospect of a win looked dismal for Galwey Auctioneers but whatever it was that was said in the dressing room at half time certainly did the trick because they approached the final two periods with the enthusiasm that they have shown in the past.

The home side shot 27 points during the third quarter and played a brilliant defence holding a baffled U.L. to just 12 points.  Mags Daly was once again a huge asset to Castleisland winning ball both offensively and defensively. Jennifer O’Connor and Eileen O’Connor were also instrumental in the sides’ success while Tracey Hartnett and Sandra O’Connor were unstoppable. St. Mary’s led by two as the sides entered the final period.

St. Mary’s got into foul trouble early in the fourth quarter but still outscored their opponents by five points. During this final quarter U.L. showed great accuracy from the free throw line where seven of their 14 points were scored from.

The Hartnett sisters Sandra and Tracey were top scorers for Castleisland scoring 19 and 17 points respectively for the game while responsible for fifty per cent of the sides’ scores for the second half of the game. Miriam Byrne was outstanding throughout the game and was responsible for netting over half of U.L. scores on the night with a massive tally of 34 points to her credit.

Final Score: Galwey Auctioneers 71          U.L. Aughinish 64

 Galwey Auctioneers: Sandra O’Connor 19, Tracey Hartnettt 17,  Eileen O’Connor 10, Tara Brosnan 7, Máire Walsh 7, Jennifer O’Connor 5, Dara Barrett 4, Mags Daly 2, Tracey O’Sullivan, Una O’Mahony, Jackie Hartnett, Réidin O’Loughlin.

U.L. Aughinish: Miriam Byrne 34, Louise Mulcahy 13, Niamh O’Donovan, 7, Caroline Gray 6, Aisling Danagher 2, Adaoin Mackey 2, Sinead Nihill, Suzanne Fitzpatrick, Sinead Bruton.

Cup success for Mustang Sally’s.

Mustang Sally’s St. Paul’s will be the ones flying the Kerry flag in the next round of the division one ladies cup following their defeat over Galwey Auctioneers on Sunday.

The pace of the game was fast from the tip and for the first two quarters it was basket for basket similar to the recent league clash between the sides.

Galwey Auctioneers won possession from the tip but failed to make a score, while Muriossa Galwey made sure of her opportunity at the other end of the court. A steal resulted in a successful la-up for Eileen O’Connor to put the visitors on the score board.  St. Paul’s persisted in cutting through drawing fouls from their opponents and winning a series of free throws.

Galwey Auctioneers were defending well and winning ball but despite managing to put up several shots in the early part of the period they could not make the scores.  Sandra O’Connor was introduced into the game with just over five minutes remaining in the quarter and she immediately made a difference to her side scoring seven points in succession to make the side level with 3.40 remaining.  Catriona O’Connell was playing well for Mustangs as was Lynn Jones while Tracey Hartnett was strong for St. Mary’s and put her side ahead for the first time when she netted two from the free throw line.

St. Paul’s Carolyn O’Mahony was quick to respond levelling from the free throw line and then adding three more to give her side the edge once again. St. Paul’s finished the quarter just two points ahead of their opponents.

Jennifer O’Connor put St. Mary’s ahead once again in the early part of the second quarter. Catriona O’Connell whose shooting was very much on target throughout the game made one for St. Paul’s before the Hartnett sisters team work pushed Castleisland ahead by four. Three steals were then turned-over by St. Mary’s, still the sides were within a basket of each other up to the final minute of the quarter when St. Paul’s Muriosa Galwey netted a three on the buzzer giving them a seven point lead at the end of the second quarter.

The game changed completely from the start of the third quarter.  St. Paul’s went on a scoring spree netting 10 fast points to St. Mary’s four in the first three minutes.  Catriona O’Connell and Carolyn O’Mahony were playing well for Paul’s while Mags Daly and Sandra O’Connor were fighting hard for Castleisland.  St. Paul’s made several steals all of which they made good while St. Mary’s made some bad passes and missed simple lay-ups. St Paul’s had stretched their lead considerably before Sandra O’Connor and Dara Barrett and Eileen O’Connor reduced the gap to16. Scores from Amanda Brosnan and Lynn Jones stretched Mustang Sally’s lead to 21 points as the buzzer went on the third quarter.

The fourth quarter was similar to the third in that St. Paul’s continued to dominate.

The difference between the sides was in the shooting with St. Paul’s being far more accurate than their opponents on the day.  St. Mary’s appeared to have run out of steam in the second half but considering that they had played a tough league game in Castleisland less than 20 hours earlier it was hardly surprising.

Final Score: Mustang Sally’s St. Paul’s 72  Galwey Auctioneers 55.

Mustangs St. Paul’s: Catriona O’Connell 25, Carolyn O’Mahony 14, Muriossa Galwey 12, Cassandra Buckley 11, Lynn Jones 5, Marguerite Cronin 3, Mairead Finnegan 3, Amanda Brosnan, Marion O’Callaghan, Orla Kavanagh.

Galwey Auctioneers: Sandra O’Connor 16, Jennifer O’Connor 8, Mags Daly 8, Eileen O’Connor 5, Maire Walsh 5, Tracey O’Sulivan 4, Dara Barrett 4, Jackie Hartnett 3, Tracey Hartnett 2, Tara Brosnan, Reidin O’Loughlin and Louise Hartnett.

Home venue no asset to Galwey Auctioneers.

Detroit guard Molly Peterman was the difference resulting in a win for Tipperary Knights when Galwey Auctioneers met them for the second time this season.

The game was slow to kick off with both side missing several shot opportunities.

St.Mary's new signing Dara Barrett.

Galwey Auctioneers Dara Barrett registered the first two scores of the game for her side while Molly Peterman who scored  huge 35 points during the game was first to score for The Knights.  Galwey Auctioneers were defending well and making it difficult for their opponents to shoot but both side missed a bit in this first quarter, which ended with a low seven points to eight in favour of the visitors.

Peterman netted an early two for her side while Sandra O’Connor and Una O’Mahony kept St. Mary’s in touch. While St. Mary’s managed a16 points and some good defensive rebounds in this period they were still missing a lot. Sinead Philips and Lorraine Farrelly along with Molly Peterman ensured that The Knights added four more points to their lead at half time leaving the half-time score at 23 points to 28 in favour of the visitors.

Reidin O’Loughlin goes for the basket

Edel Maher registered her second score of the game, a three pointer at the start of the third quarter, Maire Walsh responded with three for the home side. Knights made some good steals during this quarter and were successful in most shot attempts.

Eleven points separated the sides as they entered the final quarter.

St. Mary's Chairman Pat Hartnett enjoys the game with his grand daughter Rebecca.

Molly Peterman was once again the difference in the final period scoring 14 of her sides 27 points for the quarter. Knights were rebounding well and made several fast breaks stretching their lead to 24 points by the end of the game.

Final Score: Galwey Auctioneers 53            The Knights 77.

Galwey Auctioneers: Tracey O’Sullivan 9, Eileen O’Connor 8, Tracey Hartnett 7, Maire Walsh 6, Dara Barrett 5, Sandra O’Connor 4, Mags Daly 4, Reidin O’Loughlin 3, Christina Fleming 3, Una O’Mahony 2, Tara Brosnan 2, Alma O’Mahony.

The Knights:Molly Peteman 35, Edel Maher 14, Lorraine Farrelly 14, Aoife O’Dwyer 5, Sinead Philips 3, Maire O’Connell 2, Clare Devitt 2, Lorraine McGinely 2.

Third loss for Galwey Auctioneers.

Despite holding a five-point lead in the early stages of the game, Galwey Auctioneers recorded a third league loss at the weekend.

The Castleisland girls started well registering a three from Eileen O’Connor and a two from Tracey Hartnett before their opponents managed their first score, which came from Deirdre Leahy. Scores followed for the home side from Jennifer O’Connor and Tracey Hartnett while Donoughmores Rachel Vanderwal and Stacey Brosnan made a huge impression for the Cork side scoring 18 of the sides 20 points for the quarter between them.  Galwey Auctioneers went through a slow patch mid-way through the quarter until Sandra O’Connor came in and as well as defending well, netted three consecutive baskets.  With just 1.52 remaining Donoughmores Stacey Brosnan received a pass from a Rachel Vanderwal steal that she made good leaving the sides at 16 points each. Both Brosnan and Vanderwal added baskets for Donoughmore while Tracey Hartnett, Dara Barrett and Mags Daly made vital scores at the end of the period, which finished 21 points to 20 in favor of Galwey Auctioneers.

Donoughmore went ahead for the first time in the early part of the second quarter.  During this period St. Mary’s found it difficult to score and managed a mere seven points all coming from inside. Despite the dry scoring patch, St. Mary’s defended well with Eileen O’Connor and Tara Brosnan doing a great job on Rachel Vanderwal. Donoughmore managed only 12 points during this period but held a four-point lead at half time.

St. Mary’s made a huge impression in the early part of the third quarter, Tara Brosnan and Eileen O’Connor making early scores.  Dara Barrett came into her own netting six points inside.  For a brief time it looked as though the home team were pulling away well but Rachel Vanderwal and Juliet Murphy aided their side in making a come back which saw the side level in points for the quarter. Only two points separated the side with 38 seconds remaining when Aisling Codd netted two for Donoughmore who held their four point lead as the sides entered the final quarter.

Two consecutive baskets from Stacey Brosnan inside the first 40 seconds of the last quarter proved to be fatal for Galwey Auctioneers who made some great passes and scores during the quarter but failed to make up for those two early baskets from Brosnan.

Donoughmore boxed out well preventing the home side from getting rebounds.Once again it was Rachel Vanderwal and Stacey Brosnan who were registering tohe majority of the scores for Donoughmore who at one point held a 14 point lead. Scores from Galwey Auctioneers Alma O’Mahony and Dara Barrett narrowed the gap and a three on the buzzer from Jackie Hartnett left the final score at 67 points to 76 in favor of Donoughmore.

Galwey Auctioneers back on form.

A very different display of basketball was witnessed when Galwey Auctioneers met U.L. for the second time in a fortnight in Limerick on Saturday.  Both sides showed more discipline throughout the game, which was once again close.

St. Mary’s led for each of the first three quarters. Tara Brosnan was strong up front assisted by Tracey and Jackie Hartnett with Jennifer O’Connor and Mags Daly playing very well inside.  Kristin Zompette and Louise Mulcahy were strongest in the early part of the game for U. L. who trailed by six points at the end of the first quarter.

The second quarter saw Castleisland’s Máire Walsh and Eileen O’Connor in fine shooting form but U.L. had settled by now, Kristin Zompette and Miriam Byrne playing very well.  At half time the score line read U.L. 33 to 42 points for Galwey Auctioneers.

Zompette continued to play well for U.L as the third quarter progressed but her side was up against a very tight and strong defense from the Castleisland girls and found it difficult to get shots off.  Both sides remained scoreless for the first two minutes of the quarter until Jennifer O’Connor made one from the free throw line for St. Mary’s, which was immediately followed by a basket from Tracey Hartnett who had a tremendous game. U.L. made several turnovers in offense due to the pressure put on them from the St. Mary’s defense.

Miriam Byrne made the first score of the period for U.L. this was responded to immediately by two from Jennifer O’Connor. Niamh O’Donovan made some impressive scores for U.L. who made a comeback in the latter stages of this quarter mainly due to the efforts of O’Donovan, Byrne and Zompette. Eileen O’Connor made an impressive steal, which set Dara Barrett up for two points, This was Barrett’s debut game with Castleisland and she was at this point winning all defensive rebounds for St. Mary’s. A lapse in the St. Mary’s defense made three’s possible for U.L.’s Niamh O’Donovan and Kristin Zompette, this narrowed the gap but St. Mary’s Máire Walsh and Jackie Hartnett kept their side in touch. Miriam Byrne came into her own in the dying seconds of this third quarter making scores that left only three points between the sides as they entered the fourth quarter.

Two steals from U.L. saw them equalize early in the quarter.  Jackie Hartnett made one from the free throw line while her sister Tracey made two to give St. Mary’s the edge once again.  A full court press by U.L. put pressure on St. Mary’s who had three successive turnovers.  Louise Mulcahy scored leaving just one point between the sides mid-way through.  Dara Barrett continued to do well on the boards for St. Mary’s but at this point in the game neither side was shooting well.  St. Mary’s repeatedly tried to get the ball inside but U.L. intercepted several of these attempts.  Miriam Byrne made two from the free throw line for U.L putting them ahead for the first time in the game with just three minutes remaining.  Tracey Hartnett continued to work hard for St. Mary’s and was good for two from the free throw line.

Miriam Byrne made one for U.L. and just two points separated the sides with one minute and forty two seconds remaining.  Following an offensive rebound, Jennifer O’Connor put Galwey Auctioneers ahead by two more points, Kristin Zompette responded with two, with only two points between the sides St. Mary’s had a turnover which resulted in them giving away two free throws.  U.L. failed to make either shot and in turn sent Galwey Auctioneers Jennifer to the line with just 27 seconds to play. O’Connor was good for one.  A costly traveling violation for U.L gave St. Mary’s possession with just five seconds remaining.  A long pass to Jennifer O’Connor ensured safety, O’Connor attempted a two that was rebounded by Eileen O’Connor and set her up for two points on the buzzer giving Galwey Auctioneers a five-point win on the day.

Final Score:  U.L. 63            Galwey Auctioneers 68

U.L.:  M. Byrne 20, K. Zompette 20, L. Mulcahy 10, N. O’Donovan 6, R. Fitzgerald 4, A. Mackey 3, S. Bruton, E. Mullane, S. Holmes, S. Fitzpatrick, S. Nihill, C. Gray.

Galwey Auctioneers: J. O’Connor 14, M. Walsh 11, J. Hartnett 10, T. Hartnett 9, E. O’Connor 9, t. Brosnan 8, M. Daly 5, D. Barrett 2.

Next weekend will see local rivals Mustang Sally’s St. Paul’s meet Galwey Auctioneers in the second round of the senior cup.  This game will take place in Presentation Killarney on Saturday and tip off is at 7.30pm.

Disastrous finish cost St. Mary’s

Galwey Auctioneers suffered a big loss to U.L. in Limerick on Saturday last.  The Castleisland side led throughout the game but made some fatal slip-ups inside the final two minutes, which cost them the game in overtime.

Castleisland looked the stronger early on in the game, they defended well and had no trouble breaking the U.L. defence but they found it difficult to make scores and missed many lay-up opportunities.  U.L. lost possession on several occasions for travelling violations.

Tracey Hartnett was very strong on top for Galwey Auctioneers while Una O’Mahony and Jackie Hartnett also made their presence felt. While Rebecca Fitzgerald, Emma Mulhane and Miriam Byrne were strongest for UL at this point.

UL made some fast breaks towards the end of the period going ahead briefly but Jackie Hartnett made two consecutive steals scoring on each occasion to keep the St. Mary’s girls ahead by two at the end of the first quarter.

Caroline Grey levelled for U.L. early in the second quarter and Kristin Zompette pushed the home team ahead with a three just under two minutes into the second period.  Galwey Auctioneers Sandra O’Connor provided Eileen O’Connor with a pass which put the sides on par once again and so it continued throughout the quarter with U.L. netting just a point more than their visitors during this second period which saw the teams break at half-time with the score board reading 40 to 39 in favour of Galwey Auctioneers.

St. Mary’s missed an opportunity in the early stages of the third quarter to push further ahead, Emma Mullane netted one of only two baskets scored from play by U.L. during this period and the sides were level again until Jennifer O’Connor who came into form during this quarter kept St. Mary’s in touch throughout. Once again though St. Mary’s who got themselves into foul trouble early in the quarter missed several opportunities.  U.L. capitalised on this netting 12 of their 16 points during this period from the free throw line. Miriam Byrne who had a great game for U.L. continued to be a problem for the visitors.  Despite this though a combined team effort saw St. Mary’s win the period by six points and hold a seven point lead going into the fourth quarter.

Galwey Auctioneers had a tremendous start to this fourth quarter with Una O’Mahony netting two consecutive baskets assisted by Sandra O’Connnor and Jennifer O’Connor. Tracey O’Sullivan added two more to this.  St.Mary’s were playing a solid defence now and looking the better team.  Zompette made a score for U.L but Tracey O’Sullivan was quick to respond with a three.  Galwey Auctioneers were in foul trouble once again with just four and a half minutes remaining and with only an eleven strong panel.  Nevertheless they held a fourteen-point lead with just over three minutes of normal play to go.   U.L. made a come back at this point and with just a minute and a half remaining only six points separated the sides.  Galwey Auctioneers appeared to lose control now and on the inbound, gave three consecutive turnovers under the U.L. board, all of which U.L. made good. The side were level with 1.01 on the clock.  Sandra O’Connor ably assisted Una O’Mahony who was good for two with just 8.4 seconds remaining but a costly foul put the reliable Miriam Byrne to the line and she equalised to put the game into overtime.

U.L made good use of the five minutes of overtime, depriving their opponents from scoring from play while they managed a massive 13 points mostly from play. Christina Fleming, Alma O’Mahony and Una O’Manhony were all unluck with three point attempts in the dying seconds.  Una O’Mahony scored St. Mary’s only two points during the extra period from the free throw line leaving 11 points between the sides at full time.  All in all it was an unnecessary loss by Castleisland but a great comeback from U.L.

Final Score: U.L. 94            Galwey Auctioneers 83

U.L Miriam Byrne 32, Kristin Zompette 21, Emma Mullane 14, Rebecca Fitzgerald 13, Caroline Grey 6, Niamh O’Donovan 6, Suzanne Fitzpatrick 2, Aoife Donoghue, Sinead Nihill, Aisling Danagher, Sinead Bruton.

Galwey Auctioneers: Sandra O’Connor 16, Una O’Mahony 14, Jennifer O’Connor 11, Tracey O’Sullivan 10, Jackie Hartnett 9, Eileen O’Connor 7,  Tracey Hartnett 5, Mags Daly 4, Christina Fleming 3, Alma O’Mahony 2, Máire Walsh 2.

The sides meet once again in Limerick on November 11th.  This game will be played in Castletroy at 3pm.

Galwey Auctioneers go down by one.

Galwey Auctioneers suffered their first loss of the season at the hands of Mustang Sally's St.Paul's when the sides clashed at St. Mary's first home game which was held in Tralee Sports Complex on Sunday last.

Galwey Auctioneers started well winning the tip and registering two points, which came from Eileen O'Connor.  Defensively Tracey Hartnett and Jennifer O'Connor held Mustangs at bay but both sides missed several shot opportunities during the early part of this first quarter. Mustang's first score of the game came from Lynn Jones who netted a point from the free throw line, Mags Daly responded with two for Castleisland before Murissa Galwey netted her first three pointer of the game. The sides were level with 4.23 remaining when Murissa Galwey made two to put St. Paul's ahead for the first time.

It was cat and mouse from here in as threes came from Eileen O'Connor for the home side and from Marion O'Callaghan for the visitors.

St. Mary's sustained an injury at this point and Sandra O'Connor was introduced into the game. With 45 seconds Murissa Galwey was good for two from the free throw line putting Paul's ahead by two, Jackie Hartnett reduced this lead to a single point as the first quarter ended.

The start of the second period saw both teams have several missed opportunities once again.  Tara Brosnan registered a three as her first score of the game putting the home team ahead; this was short lived as Catriona O'Connell responded.

Good defence from both Sandra O'Connor and Jennifer O'Connor kept St. Paul's from scoring as the home side went seven points ahead at one point but scores in the latter part of the period from Sinead O'Connell brought Paul's back to within five points of their opponents by half time.

The third quarter was similar to the first two as the sides went basket for basket.  Eileen O'Connor and Tracey Hartnett were working hard for St. Mary's while Lynn Jones and Murissa Galwey continued to impress for St. Paul's.  While Castleisland were playing well they went through a patch of not making the scores and St. Paul's crept back into the lead.  At this point St. Paul's Murissa Galwey was on four fouls while St. Mary's Sandra O'Connor was on three.

With the visitors in foul trouble Sandra O'Connor made good the opportunity to level the side with 2.26 remaining.  St. Paul's introduced Cassandra Buckley to the game.  The sides were level with 18 second remaining in the quarter when Eileen O'Connor made a free throw to give St. Mary's a 35 to 34 point lead as the sides entered the final quarter.

The home team started off with three points from Eileen O'Connor which was superbly set up by sisters Sandra O'Connor and Jackie Hartnett but the euphoria was short lived as a series of bad passes and turnovers cost Galwey Auctioneers dearly.  Marion O'Callaghan impressed with two three pointers for St. Paul's while Catriona O'Connell netted two this combined with an earlier score from Murissa Galwey gave St. Paul's a substantial six point lead with only 4.05 remaining in the game.  The tables turned once again as the home team came back with two consecutive baskets, O'Connor and Daly came good and the home side were on top by one with less that two minutes to play.

Lynn Jones put Paul's ahead but the ever-reliable Sandra O'Connor registered three for St. Mary's giving them a two-point lead before Paul's Murissa Galwey netted a three to take advantage once again. A jump ball gave advantage to Killarney with only eight seconds on the clock and a foul presented Cassandra Buckley with an opportunity from the free throw line but at this point the clock had run down denying the home team of a third successive league win.

Final Score:      Galwey Auctioneers 52          Mustang Sally's 53.

Galwey Auctioneers St. Mary's: Sandra O'Connor 15, Eileen O'Connor 13, Mags Daly 8, Tara Brosnan 6, Máire Walsh 6, Jennifer O'Connor 2, Jackie Hartnett 2, Alma O'Mahony, Tracey O'Sullivan, Louise Hartnett, Tracey Hartnett and Una O'Mahony.

Mustang Sally's St. Paul's: Murissa Galwey 17, Marion O'Callaghan 11, Catriona O'Connell 9, Lynn Jones 8, Sinead O'Connell 4, Carolyn O'Mahony 3, Cassandra Buckley 1, Michelle Greene, Amanda Brosnan, Laura Buckley and Margaret Cronin.

Eileen O'Connor scored 7 Points

Vital win for Galwey Auctioneers.

Tara Brosnan worked tirelessly in defence.

Galwey Auctioneers secured their second win of the season in Cork at the weekend.

This was a game that Castleisland had expected to be tough as Singletons Donoughmore lined out an impressive squad of Fiona Lynch and Deirdre Leahy both of whom had played Super League with Glanmire in recent years, Juliet Murphy captain of the recent All Ireland winning ladies football squad and Rachael Vanderwal, graduate of Boston University. Vanderwal who is currently studying in Cork and was instrumental in several big wins during her years playing with Boston Uni.

As anticipated it was a tough game in front of a full house, Singletons Donoughmore having the edge on the visitors through the early stages.  Fiona Lynch and Stacey Brosnan stood out for Donoughmore registering scores for the Cork side while Sandra O’Connor and Jennifer O’Connor made scores that were vital in keeping Galwey Auctioneers within just one point of their opponents at the end of the first period.  Tara Brosnan and Eileen O’Connor worked tirelessly in defence preventing Vanderwal from doing any real damage.

Rachel Vanderwal showed her strength during the second quarter netting two baskets from play and two points from the free throw line but still Galwey Auctioneers gave a brilliant performance Jennifer O’Connor working hard on the inside while sisters Sandra O’Connor and Jackie Hartnett continued to impress and Eileen O’Connor, who at this point already had four points to her credit netted a three just ahead of the half-time buzzer to put St. Mary’s ahead by a single point at the half time interval.

The side continued to battle in the early stages of the third quarter with Mags Daly contributing inside for the visitors while Fiona Lynch continued to dominate for Donoughmore.  Eileen O’Connor and Tara Brosnan continued to keep the pressure on Rachael Vaqnderwal while mid-way through Tracey O’Sullivan went on a scoring spree during which she netted four unanswered three pointers, this unsettled the home team and gave Castleisland a nine point lead as the sides entered the final quarter.

Galwey Auctioneer got into foul trouble early in the final period and despite not having any individual at risk, they were on team fouls that resulted in giving the home team an opportunity to come back into the game.  Rachel Vander managed one basket from play during this period and eight from the free throw line while Deirdre Leahy and Stacey Brosnan also registered scores but Tracey O’Sullivan, Sandra O’Connor, Jackie Hartnet, Tara Brosnan and Mags Daly all kept St. Mary’s in touch ensuring a five point lead at the end of a brilliant game.

Final Score: Singletons SV Donoughmore 55        Galwey Auctioneers 60

Galwey Auctioneers:Sandra O’Connor 16, Tracey O’Sullivan 14, Eileen O’Connor 7, Jennifer O’Connor 6, Mags Daly 6,  Jackie Hartnett 5, Máire Walsh 3, Tara Brosnan 2, Tracey Hartnett 1.

Galwey Auctioneers play their first home game of the season in Tralee Sports Complex on Sunday next where they meet Mustang St. Paul’s at 2pm.

Good Start for Galwey Auctioneers.

St. Mary’s Galwey Auctioneers kicked off the new season with an impressive win over The Knights in Tipperary on Sunday last.  Although the first score of the game came from The Knights Lorraine Farrelly it was the visitors who dominated. Jackie and Tracey Hartnett worked tirelessly throughout to win ball outside while, Jennifer O’Connor and Sandra O’Connor were very strong inside. Fast breaks from Tara Brosnan and Eileen O’Connor led some excellent scores.  Máire Walsh was on target with three-three pointers in early stages of the game in which Christina Fleming, Eileen O’Connor, Jennifer O’Connor and Sandra O’Connor all contributed to an 11-point led at the end of the quarter.

The Knights put the pressure on in the second period and became more accurate in their shooting and defense particularly under the boards. Lorraine Farrelly, Amy O’Brien, Mags Burke and Sinead Philips all were making an impression for their side. Tracey O’Sullivan was in good shooting form for St. Mary’s as was Jackie Hartnett while Kathryn Canty was strong inside. Despite a strong comeback by The Knights, Galwey Auctioneers held a two-point lead at half time.

Galwey Auctioneers were back on track from the third quarter on.  This period was the most closely contested with the visitors outscoring the home side by just three points. St. Mary’s managed several fast breaks but The Knights responded well to each challenge and went ahead briefly mid-way through the period but threes from Eileen O’Connor and Tara Brosnan kept Galwey Auctioneers in the game.

The visitors held a five-point lead at the start of the final quarter. During this period Sandra O’Connor went on a scoring spree for St. Mary’s whose defense was faultless at this point.  The Knights had great difficulty in breaking this defense and found themselves unable carry the ball to their own board on several occasions.

Mid-way through this final period Galwey Auctioneers held a 16-point lead, which they increased to 21 on the final buzzer.
