Maree through with victory over Star
Maree got off to a great start. Belfast Star had no answer to Liam Conroy
as he hit 10 points in the quarter to get the Galway team rolling.
Assisted ably by David hansberry with 9 and Colm O'Hagan with 5 Maree
controlled matters and it seemed the game was over as a contest before it had
even begun. Gradually, however, Star steadied themselves with Conor
Jackson and Joe Burns hitting seven and eight respectively to give
them some hope at half time as they trailed 40 to 22.
Into the third quarter the Belfast men coninued the fight-back and closed the
gap to ten points with further scores from Burns and Jackson. Maree were
capable of upping the pace and Con Crowley with seven points saw the Galway team stretch
their lead once more. At the end of the third they had a commanding lead
55 to 42.
Into the fourth quarter and Star rallied once more. Great defence and tenacity
saw them close the gap to five points with three minutes remaining but a strong
finish by Maree with Hansberry and O'Hagan netting easy lay-ups saw the
Galwaymen home in convincing fashion.
